    hi there,

i am using winxp, service pack 1, this is not my main pc, it's one for the kids. Now they want to install a program and the installer has to be updated, after seeing that the install program tries to install the new windows installer, (starting service and so on ...) i get the message setup was unable to upgrade to windows installer, access denied .... Looked in the log, no extra info, looked at the msi.dll, still 2.0 version. Can somebody give a hint what to do ...

    Thx Tom

    Hello Tom,

There is a v3.0 installer for XP at the MS update site - KB893803 - however, I'm not sure whether SP2 is a prerequisite, it may be.

Is there a reason for not having SP2 installed, especially on the kids computer where security is of added concern?

    Regards - Charles

Various reasons why you would get an "access denied" warning when using "windows updates ". I suspect this is as simple as a nonadministrator or limited user account being used or a security/policy glitch but here's a google groups list which covers this problem from all angles:
    http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=lang_en&num=30&q=xp+"windows+update"+"access+denied"

Read through some of these and see if any apply. I could have offered or doled out one or two of these as possibilities but the number of root causes are so vast, I thought the list would be a better idea. If and when you find the one that applies to you please remember to update your post with the fix or method you used to get over this hurdle.... :)

According to Belarc Advisor I installed 3.0 on April 12 2005 and 3.1 on 19 May 2005 - as far as I recall through Windows Update.

No problems that I am aware of - running XP Pro SP2.

Thanks Pete. Is there a way to revert back, just in case? I use GoBack, but I may not notice right away. I suppose I could try installing a program. I imagine the 3.1 would show up in the control panel.

    Yes - Add/Remove Programs > Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) or here ....

C:\WINDOWS\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803$\msi.dll (must show Hidden Files & Folders)

    I installed the 3.1 v2
Just out of curiosity, how would you check the version on system to see if it did update it? Time stamp? Exe somewhere in the Installer folder?

    XP SP2 Home Edition

    Hi Alicia,

There should be an Add/Remove entry for it: KB893803 v2. I can't find a specific .exe file in Windows for it.

    Hi again,

If you're really curious - Look in $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$ in Windows and open it and you'll see the files that were replaced.

This is a Hidden file/folder - go into the drive tools > Folder options > view tab and scroll down to hide hidden files/folders and uncheck.

    Regards - Charles

    Found A Solution

    SOLUTION

Hi everybody , i found a solution for it....

    here it comes

    1. go here
    windows installer problems

do exactly what method 3 and 4 says

    2. then install again, if you got it like me then you'll get the same error as earlier (access denied or setup was unable to upgrade installer), but don't click the close button, just restart the pc.

    3. go to services (services.msc) be sure that the rpc has started (i've got two of them, don't know if this right but hey... just rpc and rpc locator(start em both), then go to windows installer (in the services screen) and check also if this is started

    4. reinstall and it should work :D (for me it does)

Hope this is helpful for someone
