problems reading floppy discs

Hi....I just obtained a Dell 8300 series PC. This computer is in great working order....barely two years old....still under warranty....came from a library and has dvdrom, cdrw drive, floppy drive, zip drive. The floppy drive is giving me problems.....it wants to format every disc I stick in it?? but then when I say ok, it says it can't format the disc?? Is this drive toast?? My device manager shows no problems with the drive.
does anyone know what this behavior means?

Go thru the steps, and if no joy, replace the drive. Floppys these days are very inexpensive.
