When I start my kids computer, I get a message that I have a corrupt or damaged file. Config.SYS has an error on line 1. also states that C\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS is missing. I take it that this has something to do with the sound since I get none from the speakers. Help.

    Hi PM,
First of all, don't be intimidated by the length of the reply! :)

Is this one, two, or three error messages? I'm guessing that the error message about the missing file is related to the config.sys file error. When you open Windows, click on Start, select run, and type "msvonfig ". Then select the config.sys tab. Since it says error on line 1, there will probably be some reference there to "C\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS ". If this is not a typo, clcik on this entry, then click edit at the bottom of the window. Put a ":" between "C" and "\ ".
As for the sound, there are 2 options. If it is a separate card, try inserting it into a different slot and restarting the computer. I had a similar problem with my computer, and this seemed to fix it. If it is on-board, or you simply don't want to opne your PC for whatever reason (warranty would be a good one :) ), try this:
Right-click My Computer on the desktop, and choose properties. Then click on Device Manager tab. You should see a list of things there. Look for one called Sound, Video, and Game controllers. Is there anything with a yellow exclamaiton or red X there?
If there is an exclamation, right-click the device, and select "Properties, and tell us what it says under "Device Status ". If there is a red X, right click and say "enable ". If you can't (no enable option), select Properties, and there should be a button saying "enable ". Click on it. If there is no button, then again, report back what it says under device status.
If all you see is a + in front of this item, then click on it, and it should give you a list. Right-click on each and every item in the list, select remove, and then restart your PC. It wil aotumatically detect and re-install your hardware.
If you continue to have probelms, then post back and myself and/or others will offer more assistance.

    Cheerz!

    C\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS

Anybody want to bet on the fact that that is looking for a CDROM for DOS.

And that may be causing the problem for sound.

Unless you are using some DOS software just renmae the C:\Config.sys to something like Config.old.

Windows does not need the Config.sys for any reason.

DOS programs may need it but Windows does not.

I would venture a wild guess that the errors would go away and the sound would work.

At least this is where I would start.
