Several weeks ago I tried to network my XP SP2 computer with my ME computer. Since this is new to me, I got instructions from a friend, but when I finished following the instructions I couldn't see both computers and was unable to continue with it. Eventually I undid the whole thing. Unfortunately, in the process of trying to network the computers (not undoing it), I lost almost all the icons I have in my system tray. Even icons for things I want, like my printer tools and several other things.

Not only that, but now when I boot up my computer I get the following message: "The function you are trying to use cannot be accessed at this time. To fix this problem, please restart windows. Info number: 236." Which I never got before.

    Of course rebooting doesn't help.

I looked for this entry in the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify, but I didn't find it in there. Don't know if that's relevent but it was in another thread I was reading about system tray icons.

I would appreciate any help I can get in getting my icons back. Thanks.

This sometimes works for missing icons in the system tray :-

Go to Start, Run and type services.msc and OK. Scroll down your list of Services and find both SSDP Discovery Service and Universal Plug and Play Device Host. Double-click on each in turn and under Startup Type, choose Disable and OK.

Your error message is from ICQ.

Either upgrade to Version ICQ 5, or go into preferences and stop ICQ from loading on startup. Then start ICQ manually after start.

As to the icon issue, the suggestion by TacoBelle is a good one. See for that suggestion and others: http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSystray.htm

Thanks for the quick replies, but I'm not missing any systray icons. :)

I'm missing the systray popups. Messages that popup from the systray.

My ICQ doesn't startup with Windows. I haven't used ICQ in ages. I use Miranda.

    Thanks again. :)

Thanks Burr, It seems to have worked. No message and my icons are back. But I don't just like to fix a problem, I like to understand what got fixed and why it got that way in the first place. I sure would like it if you could explain what happened and what I actually did to fix it, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks again. TacoBelle
