I'm having a problem with a virus on my computer. It was caused by my limewire program. I've tried a couple of things to try and get the virus off of my computer but nothing seems to be working. All of the ideas that I used were from people on the Lime Wire forums.

A computer teacher at my school told me that one way to get rid of a virus is to erase your memory on your hard drive. She also said that I should have gotten a CD with my computer that will erase it for me but I never got one. I was then told by a friend that I can reformat my computer with will do the same thing.

So my question is this: How do I reformat my computer to get rid of this virus? Do I go into the reboot menu when my computer starts up? Or is there a CD that I can buy from Best Buy or another store that I can use to erase my hard drive?

Hi, Dazdnconfuzzled. Welcome to Windows BBS. :)

I suggest you carefully follow the all of the instructions in this link and paste your HijackThis log and Deckard's System Scanner main.txt log in our Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

Malware removal experts there can likely help you remove the malware from your computer without having to take drastic actions such as formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows (if you have patience, carefully follow their guidance, and provide all necessary feedback in regards to their guidance).

EDIT: I expect somewhere along the way they will advise you to uninstall Lime Wire and any other P2P applications you may have installed. P2P file sharing is a common way to get malware infections and removal of P2P software will certainly help prevent future infections.
