I to have a problem trying to run CHKDSK from the command prompt. Windows tells me it's not recognized as an Internal or External command, Operable program or Batch File.

I have chkdsk on my computer, location: C:\Windows\system32 and C:\Windows\system32\dllcache.

What can I do to get chkdsk to run from the command prompt?

Try the following and post back your results including any error or confirmation messages you get. Start a command line session and type:

    path C:\Windows\system32 <press enter>

    chkdsk <press enter>

If chkdsk.exe does not run, go to the C:\Windows\System32\ folder and highlight chkdsk and choose properties. Report back what it says for all size and date info. Also check the Version.

While there, double click it and see if it will run.

Please don't tag onto another thread even if your problem appears to be the same - in this case it isn't :)

I found a solution by following the directions is KB 315265: How to perform disk error checking in Window XP. Guided Help didn't work so I used Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer.

Chkdsk ran but the results went by so fast I couldn't read what was fixed. I had chosen to Automatically fix file system errors. If someone knows how to view the report, I'd be mighty grateful.

To see the report, type eventvwr.msc into a Run window and press enter or click OK. When it opens, click Application and scroll to the item named Winlogon and you will find the results in that area.

The report can't be seen in Event Viewer because it wasn't running when checkdisk ran on system startup. To be sure I checked and sure nuff no chkdsk information.

I can't explain why you don't have it listed. The fact that you ran it and it rebooted isn't relevant since that's actually the only time it gets entered into the Eventviewer. Windows does not have to be running for the Event Viewer to receive the message from Chkdsk.

If you ran it from a Windows Command Line window without entering any /switches, it will run without rebooting but not be recorded in the Event Viewer.

What you are saying defies the normal way the process works.

Let's be sure you are looking in the Event Viewer under APPLICATION and then clicking the WINLOGON entry. The time listed for that entry should coincide with the time that you ran the disk check.

Not only is the report not in Event Viewer, but Winlogon's not there either. I can't read it, but it ran so I'll just assume that every things running as it should.

The report's not all that important, so let's just forget about it.

That's strange behaviour but if you're happy, I'm happy. I doubt it will ever cause you any problems. I do hate unsolved mysteries though. :)

    All the best,

    Dude

Now I remember why I don't have Winlogon. I use Tweak UI for Windows XP and set it to automatic logon, therefore I don't have to log on when Windows boots up.
