I have recently downloaded the freeware scanner version of Prevx CSI. I was interested if anyone else has used this & what they thought of it. It keeps giving me a clean bill of health & works fine so far. I was getting a bit paranoid about the whole CARNY_RIDE rootkit scare .

From what I can gather Prevx Limited is a privately-held internet security company headquartered in Derby, England, with staff based in locations around Europe and the US. Prevx is a wholly owned subsidiary of Retento Ltd. Retento Ltd can be reached in the UK on 01332 916 350 or in the USA on 1 888 895 4943.

I would like to know if anybody uses this as I am now equally paranoid of downloading rogue anti-spyware.

    re pre

    ---------------------------------------------------------
re this post------ i like this product but check it out using sophos, bitdefender and kapersky for independent views as i think they may respond.
Right now it is back to the days of dos 5-6 widows 3-95-98.
use lateral thinking and also that program if those programs [including fprot] say ok.
go to iobit com and use the older[not beta] advanced care {i think they are also developing an antivirus]
use various of the spyware and remember they can condemn one another, Use Noadware nad spyware detective by maxsecure [detects trojans as well] You can unistall if necessary and if buy keep ref number. Try uniblue
and your pre should fit in among this .
Empty out .com .net .org dot ru etc from domains and filter at p3p [ie copy of domains making sure not to empty out eg passport.com of microsft etc. Rest will be dangerous and likely you will sustain an attack during removal process if online at same time-- use regedit with registry first aid or registry mechanic to remove whole portions of these dot coms. Registry first aid the old fav of eg pc magazine is not liked by editors any more prob because esellerate store owns it-- but spies know spies and registry first aid was always favourite
    so back to early widows--
watch for backdoor and gen [see other post] as more happens -- so remove all things even using paretos rubbish remover or the 2 simple but pointing recuva

I am quite familiar with the product, and the team behind the product. It is good, and trustworthy as well. Do not be surprized however, if you one day find that the freeware version may not always remove what it detects, and a suggestion to upgrade to the paid version promises to remove it. While I do not agree with that methodology (it's too much the same way the rogues operate), I do not believe you would be throwing away your money if you purchased the application.

    Rogues & false positives

Do you think Prevx would deliberately give me a false positive to induce me to buy the application?

No I do not. In fact, I would bank on that. :)

    Banking safe

I thought it would be OK. They are based in Derby so if they give me any hassle I can always get on the train & go & see them! I think it is a good quick auxiliary scanner. Not dissimilar to the Yahoo Anti-Spy but Prevx is only a scanner until you buy it. Who knows? I may buy it some day. It says it can detect the dreaded CARNY_RIDE  so that's something I suppose lol.
