    in Microsoft Windows XP by Bott & Siechert, pg 227, is written:
    =========================
    "The prefetching code is even more effective when used in conjunction with the built-in defragmenting tool. Every three days, during idle times, this utility rearranges program code, moving it to the outside of the disk to make it more efficient when loading. To force Windows to perform this optimization without having to do a full defragmentation, use the Defrag.exe command with the -b switch. For instance: defrag c: -b.

    This command forces the command-line version of Defrag.exe to run, optimizing boot files and applications while leaving the rest of the drive undisturbed. "
    ===========================
    I am lost wrt the following:
    a. there is no -b parameter for defrag.exe in the docs or from command line.???
    b. does the system run 'defrag c: -b' every 3 days? and, if so, why should it need to be scheduled?
    c. ... and if so, what is the purpose of the last paragraph above?

    Greatly apreciate any insight.

    Chuck

    Well, this KB article tells a different story -
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283080

    I assume you have gone Start > Run > type in defrag c: -b and nothing happens??

    Can't really help further as I use Diskeeper - written by the same folks who supplied the cut down version - Disk defragmenter' to MS for XP.

    Pete,

    Thanks for the feedback. The KB article did not identify the -b option either.

    Yes I did try 'Start > Run > type in defrag c: -b ', got no error msgs and it came back to the command line after a short while. Hence, I assume it did the defrag, but why no documentation? :confused:

    Will short circuit my confusion, follow your example/advice, and get Diskeeper.

    Cheers,
    Chuck
