    My basic problem is listed below under
    "SP2 kills CD RW ".

    One solution I haven;t been able to work:
    restore the system to pre-SP2 state.

    SP2 wiped all old System Restore points, and
    uninstalling SP2 changed (almost) nothing;
    SP2 was then reinstalled, apparently for good
    (i.e., it won't allow itself to be be uninstalled again).

    Are the old system resore points hidden somewhere?
    Is there any way to get the system back to pre-SP2 state?

    Hello plbeard,

    You should have an Add/Remove entry for SP2. Reading your post, you haven't used the Add/Remove to roll back SP2 and THEN use the SP2 created restore point.

    One more point, all your restores wiped out the previous restore points because of the size of SP2. I don't know how big your partition/drive is, but the max room is 12% of that.

    plbeard--Your System Restore files are normally stored in C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}
    If you go into this file you might find SR points before you installed SP2. Mine go back almost three months (and I have cut down the size of the SR folder to about 2/3's of default).

    Hi plbeard,

    If you go into this file you might find SR points before you installed SP2.

    In order to see the System Volume Infornation folder: bring up the drive > Tools > Folder options > View tab > scroll down to "Hide protected operating system fiiles" and uncheck.

    Regards - Charles
