I would like to remove or disable the standby option from the shutdown dialog box. I can't find how to do this anywhere, does anyone have any ideas.

On some machines power management can be disabled in the BIOS but on laptops these settings are often not present.

I have managed to make hibernation occur when standby is initiated, however I can not make it just do nothing.

    Thanks

You know, this is such a simple sounding thing and one that admins might well want to do. Lots of searching and I find that quite a few have asked how to do it but no one has offered a method.

I can't either - well, not directly. But there does appear to be a work around if you want to try it.

Completely remove the Shutdown option from the start menu.
    Go to the registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look for a value NoClose. This value does not exist by default. If you don't have it, create it as a REG_DWORD and set the value to 1.

Then create desktop icons (maybe put them in the quick launch section of the toolbar) using shutdown.exe with switches to perform the actions you want to allow. Shutdown, Restart, Log Off are certainly possible.

Shutdown.exe is a standard part of XP but for 2K, you probably have to load it from the Resource Kit. Look Here for details.
