Can someone tell me how I can get permission to change the Power mangement time.

I have the Adminstrator password and was able to go in there and change the settings no problem but when I went to one of the other user sites (which I also know the password to open it)
When I go change the power settings I get "Acesss Denied "?

Somebody set the monitor and standby to 10 minutes and it' driving this lady crazy with the shutdowns.

Running it while logged on as administrator should do it.

But here is how to do it while logged on as the user:

    search for Powercfg.cpl

when found rt click it and you should have RunAs as a selection, pick RunAs it will ask for a username and password give it the Administrator username and password. Wha-La!

Mike, where do I search for this Powercfg.cpl

I went to Start>Run and typed in Powercfg.cpl and that bought me right back to Power Option Properties which after trying to make the changes it denied me access.

No Paul to do what you asked, you should log in as the user she will be using, not administrator.

To change the power setting in this logon while loged on as her then you will do the search for powercfg and rt click it. It will have a runas entry in the menu. When you select it, it will ask fo a user name and password give it the administrator user name and password.

Paul what you are saying to XP is "Ok I am not loged on as administrator but I want to do this one thing as administrator because the logged on user does not have permission to do it "!

Mike, I did that --I logged into her name where I wanted to change the Power settings.

Then did as you told me --went to searc&files

the Powercfg.cpl came up --I rt clicked -then clicked on Run and

went to the section that asked for user name (the only thing these people have listed as administrator is the word COMPUTER) so I scrolled down to that clicked it and it put it the user name box and then typed in the user name and all I got was the Acess denied Warning--I'm going to call her and see if she has a different Administrator name. I also tried it using Administrator for the user name --same answer.

And if that doesn't work I'm quitting and going look for a replacement for thr Waffle House Princess Mother.

    Sorry late getting back!

    Two things!

    1. After you find powercfg.cpl and rt click it do you not see a "RunAs" item on this menu? It sounds like you are saying that after you rt click you are going to the Start-Run. This is not what I directed.

Here is an easier way to do it. Go to control panel and hold the shift down while rt clicking the power options icon. Now you should see the RunAs. When you select it you will need the administrator password. Waste of time if you don't.

    2. So we need to get an Administrator password. It can be any user with admistrator privialage. So if you can get on as a user who has this you can change the passwords of all others to something you know.

Mike, I was using Run as--
Whay I came to find out later was that her Daughter was also logged on as Administrator. I even changed her to Limited user and it took her name off the scrooldown box in Powercfg.
But even with her name removed I was left with ADMISTRATOR & COMPUTER and I tried the 2 passwords she knew but no luck.

She didn't know her daughter password and couldn't locate her daughter--anyhoe she left town and when she comes back next time I'll be able to adjust it.

As usual you taught me a lot of new stuff and I certainly appreciate it.

    Thanks again and Happy Easter.

Paul remember that after you have administrator access you can then change the passwords for any other user even if you don't know it1

Mike, they don't make you come up with the old one before you can enter a new one, like other passwords I changed?

Not if you have administrator access and you do it for another user and you do it in users and groups.
