Please tell me the worst case scenario in this situation: I have a Windows XP computer. Suppose that after finishing using my word processor or viewing an internet page (or whatever) and closed all the screens that I had been using, I immediately shut down my computer by pushing the power button? The computer shuts down a lot faster pushing the power button than clicking Start, Turn Off Computer, Turn Off (and even then I have to wait about 30 or 40 seconds for the computer to shut down). Thank you for your response.

Most modern computers have what is called 'a soft off' power button which shuts down the computer in a controlled manner - as opposed to simply shutting off the power abruptly. Generally it is a part press of the power button and hold for 3-4 secs operation.

Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced - Power Button and check out your setting for 'When I press the power button on my computer'.

Shutting down the computer in this way is perfectly acceptable.

Another quick method is using the keyboard .....

    Windows key > U > U to shut down
    Windows key > U > R to restart
    Windows key > U > S to standby.

These are sequential key strokes - press and release the Windows key, press and release the U key, press and release the U,R or S keys.

To PeteC: Thank you for your message. The place where it says "When I press the power button on my computer" it says "stand by ". If I click the arrow button to "shut down" can I then safely shut down my computer by pushing the power button? Thank you.
