I'm presenting this problem on behalf of my friend, Bob---Marion McCaleb
    _______________________________________________________________

Marion - the support phone number for SBC-Prodigy Support is no longer working, and I can't get anywhere on the internet....meaning I can't download or connect with links [don't know why I am still able to send/receive emails].

Called a fellow I know, Dan, who said I have a worm, which can't be picked up by antivirus programs..and that the only solution was to do a low-level format of the HDD - in other words, wipe it clean and start over! Hope not!

In the meantime, would you present the following symptoms to your BBC experts, and see what they have to say? Thanks, bob
    -------------------------------------

It crashes whenever I try to connect with Google, with links offered in emails, and even some of my things in MyDocuments. However, I can receive attachments and open them...but if I save them to MyDocuments, the system crashes when I try to recall them again.
    [a] reinstalled win98se - still misbehaved.

    clicking on Internet Explorer crashes.

[c] can't get IE, so no access to its address bar.

[d] Then, went to Windows Explorer and clicked on Internet Explorer, which to my surprise opened up the MSN homepage, with many things that MS offers. Downloaded and reinstalled Internet Explorer 6. Did not solve the problem.

[e] Your description of OLE tells me why some and not others. When error notices come up, they say "OleMainThreadWndName was forced to shut down ". Then, clicking on 'details' informs me that "IEXPRESS causes an invalid page fault in Shell32.dll ". Norton Crashguard history says the last 62 crashes have all been fault #0000005 or #0000000e. IEXPRESS appears to be a program within Internet Explorer.

[f] I cannot understand why reinstalling new copies of win98 and IE6 does not overcome some flaw in OleMainThreadWndName or IEXPRESS.

[g] I have put the computer through a complete scan with Norton System Works, and it found no problem.

[h] I also put it through a complete Norton Virus Scan, and no virus was found.

    ANY SUGGESTIONS? BOB

    marionmccaleb,

I also use Norton's, but try these free anti-virus programs and see if anything comes up. Sometimes one will pick up something that the other doesn't.

    House Call
    Panda ActiveScan
