I seem to have removed the 'ES1869 Plug and Play AudioDrive' from my computer......When I go into Devise Manager and tell it to reinstall it, the drive cannont be found. I put in the Win.98 CD, nothing. I put in the Driver CD for Win.98, nothing. While at one screen, (been to millions, don't remember how to get back) everything seemed to be connected except for "C:\Windows\System\essdc.exe" --- What have I done and how do I fix it?

I knew something was wrong with the Plug and Play awhile back, but with no speakers and dial-up, it didn't seem to be a problem. Now I'm trying to get connected to DSL...had to purchase and install the network card for ethernet, the computer was suppose to acknowledge the card upon start up. Nothing was ever acknowledged. When I went in to 'add new hardware', the card was never found. The only thing found was the plug & play. I have reinserted the card, twice, and still nothing. I don't know that much, but I think the plug & play and not reading the card are connected in some way. If they are not, could someone PLEASE help me!!!!!

    Thanking you in advance!!!!

LaDonna - Welcome to the Board :)

essdc.exe a part of the driver for your sound card.

I would try reinstalling the drivers for the ES1869 Plug and Play AudioDrive - they can be downloaded from here ....

Are you sure that your ethernet card is compatible with 98 and if so have you installed the drivers?

I have wrestled with an ESS Plug and Play...and found it is not very PLUG and PLAY!:D

I just tried to download those drivers and it asked for AU$7.95. I will see if DriverGuide has them for free.

Download and decompress the drivers to a handy folder (I make a folder C:\Drivers\ESSBlahBlah).

Knowing ESS drivers, they will not have a setup program, they will only be the raw drivers.

When you have decompressed the drivers, go to the folder and find the .inf file. Right-click on the .inf and select Install (you won't see anything happen). Go to Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager. There should be error notices in the Sound hardware items (if not, find the ESS audio controller). Highlight any (ESS) audio hardware and the click Remove button.

When you reboot and the Hardware wizard runs, change the radio button to "I will select the hardware from a list.... ". If it being seen by Plug and Play, on the next screen it will list your model, if not select "Show all hardware.." Highlight the ESS 1869 and click the "Have Disk" button when you see it. Direct it (browse) to the drivers folder, the OK button should become useable so click OK. It should install from there.

    Matt
Edit: the drivers are available at DriverGuide www.driverguide.com. You can use the username "Drivers" and the password "all ", or register for free. Search for ESS technologies soundcard model ES-1869.
Edit 2: If you still have problems, change the location of the card/s in the PCI slots. Put the Soundcard in one of the last slots (near the adge of the motherboard, the ethernet card can go in the first slots near the cable connectors. If the drivers are installed correctly, Windows should automatically install the them this time.
