when I open up note pad, the computer is typing random characters. What might be causing this? I have changed my keyboard, mouse and connection cables and the problem is still occuring.

    fixed it

Fixed my phantom typing problem. I was pretty sure it wasn't a virus, because it was a new computer and had never been connected to the internet. A friend who's an engineer found that I had a high magnetic field effecting my computer. This could be due to a ceiling fan in the same room turned on, a wireless telephone in the room, a large transformer, substation, or high voltage overhead wires near by, my computer located close to the meter on the other side of the wall, a phone or other device with a magnet in it near the monitor, the cabling routed too near a printer cable, or a surge/power strip or UPS near your monitor. This might be an ambient RFI/EMI electrical or magnetic field present around
my computer location. Causing electrical field or the conducted RFI/EMI
    electrical "noise ".
He advised me to move my monitor and install a harmonic filter, (example a good UL 1283 noise filter or Surge suppressor with UL 1283
    filter). This fixed my problem.
