Ok, I didn't seem to get any reponses from the group where I posted my questions so I am reposting them here.

How do I get rid of these darn permissions? Everytime I try to do something it says access denied. Heavens, I should be able to open any folder I want to, save to any location I want to and just plain do whatever I want to with my computer. Sure paid a lot for something that won't even let me use it the way I want to!!!

However, I am denied opening Documents and Settings, denied saving to my backup internal hard drive, denied from saving to the desktop, denied this denied that........... I have turned off the User Control option in users which I thought would solve these issues but it has not.

I have tried going into properties of folders and changed the security to allow full access but when I click "apply" it tells me "DENIED "

Would someone PLEASE tell me how to set the security the way I want it and not the way M$$$$ wants me to use it.

You can turn off a few items under management. This pemanently disables several security items in Vista. The easiest way is this:
    In "RUN" type Control Userpasswords2
Click advanced and then advanced again.
Under "users" cliock the Administrator Tab
untick the item "Account is disabled "
Now LOG OFF and you will find that you can LOGON again as the Top Administrator.
This will enable you to perform most functions on you Vista installation, but only use it for specific purposes, as it does leav you more exposed when on the web.

"Document and settings" you cannot access. It is a "junction " directory. (Read here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_junction_point )
All the well known Docs and settings items are now found under the "User" directory and just called "Documents "

    Hi Joyce,
If they happen to be shortcut icons you are seeing, I had the same problem:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?p=345208#post345208

I turned off UAC, but could not install Adobe Reader, the reason was that I needed to turn UAC back on again

I am just clicking through the warnings now, for accessing some programs I am getting 2 warnings.

The way I see it, the UAC would be somewhat invaluable for cautious beginners. For those "devil may care" types it will mean nothing, they will corrupt their system anyway. For us, it is just a major PITA.

I just find it odd that you have a Documents and Settings folder and you cannot even access it, what's the purpose, who needs a junction why not just have the actual folder.

Anyway this so called UAC that is supposed to keep you safe, and also McAfee that came with my sytem, also bitdefender and windows firewall. So much for those crappy programs.

I just did my regular searching for updates on KNOWN sites and installed the updated drives from the manufacturer websites and then ran adaware and had 171 critical items. Dont' think something was doing it's job, and now bit defender does not have the option to start with windows, it's just there if you want to run it then you have to open it after your computer starts not that bit defender ever did anything for me before. I have block 3rd party cookies, so dont' understand where or how I got all that spyware.

I now have adaware adwatch running, winpatrol, pc tools spyware doctor, spyblaster and mcafee which i am not impressed with in the least. We'll see how it goes from here about the spyware being allowed on my system. My next protection download will be Hostman host file.

I found this application add-on for Vista called TakeOwn. It is a set of files that changes your registry and adds a context menu which enables you to take ownership of any file or directory. Hold shift + right click for it to show up.

Here is the link to download.
