I've got a new Dell XP machine with a 2.26 GHz processor, 533 bus speed, and 1 GB DDR SDRAM.

So you'd think I'd have no memory problems, right?

But every once in a while, when booting up the Photoshop program I transferred from my old Win98 machine, it freezes and I have to use task manager to get out of it (I get a "not responding" notice).

After I reboot my PC, then it works fine.

And it continues working fine throughout the day. I seem to get the problem only in the morning when I return to the PC after leaving it on all night.

I'm wondering if it's a memory problem or maybe a compatability problem. Anyone have any idea how to fix it?

Like I said, with 1 GB of DDR SDRAM, I wouldn't think I'd have this sort of problem.

First thing I think I'd try is to go into the shortcut and set for Win98 compatibility mode.

    Similar Problem

dk, sorry I don't have any advise for you but wanted to say that I also have a problem when I leave my 'puter on overnight. For me, however, my connection to the internet is lost and regardless of my efforts to re-connect the only resolution so far is to reboot and then everything works as advertized. I'm using RoadRunner offered by my cable tv folks.

If you find a cure for your problem please make sure it gets posted here in hopes that it will also cure my problem.

    Thanks and good luck

dkline: What version of Photoshop? I'm using 6.0 with no problems. However, I've read that older versions do not play well with XP so, like Newt suggests, if you have a version older than 6.0, trying running it in 98 compatibility mode.

Jim, have you tried going to the command line and typing in "ipconfig /renew" (without the quotes)?

I often lose my DSL connection after a cold boot and that command works for me...most of the time.

Thanks for the suggestion, Newt and Miz. It's actually Photoshop 5.0 Limited Edition, so I've set compatibility mode for Win98 and I'll see if I have the same problem tomorrow morning.

But one thing: when I launch the program now in compatability mode, I get a message stating: "Unable to load PSUT9532.DLL. Photoshop will not be able to support 16-bit plug ins. Launch anyway? "

When I re-launch, it seems to work just fine. But I'd like to disable that message from appearing. Do you know how?
