Hi all, i've just got a new laptop, and whilst removing some of the programs i didn't need i accidently removed internet explorer etc. whilst trying to remove windows messenger via the add/remove windows components section in the control pannel. Therefore i had to do a system restore. Does this effect performance in any way? and would it be of any benefit to me to just reinstall the full operating system? (factory restore from discs provided) whilst i have no other programmes installed which didn't come on the computer.
    Cheers all.

No should not effect anything! If that is all you did.

Now System Restore itself is somewhat of a performance drag itself but as you can now see it is well worth it.

Unless you are a Pro and know what you are doing, and are backing up your system in other ways do not bother System restore.

On a new computer you will not notice it.

Exposing to Add/Remove Programs Messenger, IE and other hidden objects is not really the best way to go about stopping Messenger.

    . Use gpedit.msc: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302089

    - or -

. Use Add/Remove, Set Windows Access and Defaults:
    1) Click on Start, Control Panel
    2) Double click on Add or Remove Programs
    3) Select Add/Remove Windows Components
    4) Uncheck Windows Messenger
    5) Click Next
    6) Click Finish
    7) Restart your computer

The other failure of exposing Messenger to Add/Remove, or in using Command line equivalents, is that Windows Update will just put it back when a Comprehensive Security Update is released. The two ways above will work fine.

    Add/Remove Windows Components

As well you can add Explorer through the add / remove programs console in the control panel.
It is the second area not the first " add remove windows components" or something like that .

In XP you cannot add or remove Internet Explorer through the Add/Remove applet of Control Panel.

It is a core XP service.
