I have a Win2000 Pro laptop and a WinXP Pro PC in a peer to peer network arrangement via a crosover cable. The WinXP PC has a shared connection to the Internet. When the WinXP PC is connected to the Internet, it is not possible to access the Win2000 laptop from the WinXP PC, I get an error message that says no logon server could be found. If I close the WinXP PC's Internet connection, I can access the Win2000 laptop from the WinXP PC. Is there something I can change so that I can always access the Win2000 laptop from the WinXP PC, i.e. whether the Internet connection is active or not?

How are you trying to access the laptop? Via remote desk top or just open a shared folder? What type of internet connection are you using, modem, dsl, cable? There are seveal routers out now that make internet connetion sharing a thing of the past. If you are using dial up via a modem there are some routers that you can hook a external modem up to that will also work.

    Yes. Yes. Yes.

And well worth it. ( at least I think so )

A Router will keep the LAN and the WAN separated and both can be used at the same time.

Also with the Router no one machine is dependent on the other for Internet connection. All can be on at the same time.

I have three machine plugged into a D-Link DI 704UP ( 4 port Router with a Print Server. ) Now nobody depends on anybody to access the Internet OR the Printer.

Used to be that my machine had to be on in order for the other two to use the Printer. Not any more.

    PS
Also the Router is an INCOMING hardware Firewall.

Thanks for your comments guys. At present, the WinXP PC connects to the Internet via a USB connected ADSL modem with the Win2000 PC connected to the WinXP PC via a crossover UTP cable. This solution worked well (and was cheap!) when the Win2000 PC was a Win98SE PC (it was upgraded to Win2000, and not before time!) I had been toying with the idea of getting a combined ADSL modem/router(or switch) with individual connections to each PC but your comments seem to indicate this may be the solution to my problem so it might be time to stop 'toying' and buy!
