PDF format

    What is so special about PDF files compared to other writing programs such as MS Word or WordPerfect?

    Pat,

    As Steve says, a PDF file typically can not be altered without using Adobe Acrobat. The other thing is that Acroreader is a free viewer. You can't always view a file written in another format. Microsoft does make a viewer for some of their products but I am not sure about Word Perfect.

    Most law offices use PDF for legal documents since you can VERY easily protect the document from alteration.

    pdf files are cross platform - can be read on PC's and on Macs with only Acrobat Reader.
