Does anyone know the exact procedure for promoting a win2k3 BDC to a PDC demoting the current win2k3 PDC to BDC easily, seamlessly. No exchange server, Just basic Active Directory. I know i have to transfer the operations masters roles but is there anything else i need to know, does DCPROMO take care of the rest and which machine do i run it on first.

    Thanks

With Active Directory, all you have is domain controllers. No PDC/BDC. That was purely a piece of the classic NT4 domain model.

DCPROMO is used to turn a non DC into a DC or vice versa. With 2K and above running a server OS, you can set up a server and later change your mind and just 'promote it' to be a domain controller. Lots nicer than with NT4 where you had to create a DC as part of the OS load and could never change your mind.

they are both DC's, they have the Same AD because they replicated when we added the new DC to the domain. So if i transfer all roles to new server, i can take old server offline and there will be no problems? All file sharing is done on the new DC. If so, thanks.
