My hard drive appears to be pausing. You can hear it runnin for a short period and it will pause and tick...tick...tick and then it will function properly for a short period then pause again etc. When it pauses the whole system freezes. It does not affect every program. I am running symantec antivirus and once I actually get the program open it works fine, as does ie7. I got an error in one of my programs that said something about cyclic redundancy. Could you tell what that is? Thanks

Cyclic redundancy errors happen when there's a bad spot on the media of your hard disk.

That warning together with the other symptoms you describe strongly suggest that your hard drive is on the verge of failure.

Backup all your important data to an external source - external drive, DVD, etc if you have not already done so.

Then run the disk diagnostic software supplied by the manufacturer ....

This morning when I turned on my computer it went to a blue screen and started to run ckdsk I think was the function ,but anyway it went through and repaired what looked like a bunch of fragmented registery files and keys, and deleted all kinds of stuff. I saw in another thread last night somehthing about installing sp3 and it messing with your registry. Right now all seems to working properly, will get back to you and let you know what happens.

I would continue to be suspicious of drive per write integrity / bad sectors. Keep all your data files backed up / current on a different drive, memory card, flash drive, DVD, or CD.
