Can anyone tell me where XP stores passwords for web-sites and if the list can be edited?

    Thank you.

It is stored - in encrypted form - in the registry, so no way to edit AFAIK.

You can edit stored passwords individually by going to the web site, start typing the user name and when the drop-down list appears with past entries, use the down arrow key to select the one you want to delete the password for...and delete that entry using the delete key on the keyboard. When you do, a message will pop up asking if you want to also delete the saved password associated with that entry. Tell it "yes" and you should be good to go.
