    Hi All.

I have Partition Magic and I merged 2 partitions into one.
PM informed me that any files in the partition that is merged into the other
will be in a folder in the new partition. So far so good. I named the folder OLD, so that I can find it and delete it later. Inside that folder is only 1 file:
System Volume information. I am unable to delete this file. It always tells me "access denied ". I also tried to change the Properties, there is a green dot in Read only and a check mark in Hidden. I can not get this removed and therefore can not delete the file.
    Any help would be appreciated.

System Volume Information contains the restore points for System Restore - in this case for the old partition.

If you turn off System Restore all restore points are deleted - bear that in mind before you act. With System Restore turned off - a reboot may be necessary to reset things, you should then be able to delete it.

If not you could try MoveOnBoot

    Thanks PeteC,

I have Turned off System restore on all ( both) drives anyways and yet I get this file in every partition. I will try to remove it with Move on boot.
    Thanks again

The System Restore points are stored in the System Volume Information folder which will exist on each drive/partition which is monitored.

With System Restore turned off on a particular drive/partition that drive/partition is no longer monitored, but the folder remains, but should be empty.

BTW - there is no point in using System Restore to monitor any drive/partition other than the one on which the OS is installed as there are no System files on the other drives/partitions. By default Windows monitors all drives/partitions.

    Hi PeteC,

I downloaded Move on boot, but I can not select the file from inside move on boot and so I can not delete it. Is there another way to get rid of it?
On the other hand, so I have an extra folder with 1 file in it. It will not bother any thing.
Its just that I don’t want or need it.
    Thanks again

I'm sorry - you are correct MoveOnBoot removes files not folders - and there are no files!

You could try Eraser - another program I use which does remove folders - and I think will do so on boot if it cannot be done in Windows.

Access to System Volume Information folder how to is here

Once I got access, I was able to delete the folder but it is returned when you reboot.

The only thing in the folder upon reboot is something called "MountPointManagerRemoteDatabase ". I have no idea what that is.

Just like default My Documents and Settings folder for ID's you don't use, this is one of those folders that XP creates on any partition.

Not that hard to live with an empty folder, is it? :)

    Thanks PeteC,
    Thanks Bmoore1129,
    Thanks charlesvar.

I downloaded eraser, did not work.
I looked at MS at cacls and could not make it work either.
So I will just ignore that folder and leave it as is.
    Thanks again

    Success!!

I finally was able to delete the Folder with System Volume information.
I booted with BartPE and clicked on File management and just deleted it.
    No problem at all.
Thanks again to all who tried to help.
