How can I make Outlook 2003 use Word 2003 as an email editor?

I have set the appropriate options from Tools / Options, so that Word is used to both edit and read rtf messages.

Sending, (composing), messages and I can use Word with no problem.

However, if I try to send myself an rtf formatted message to test the setup, it can only be displayed as plain text and the display is an Outlook screen, rather than the expected Word screen.

Have I missed something obvious here? I would rather like to know just how the recipient is most likely to see my messages.

    TIA

If I understand what you want, the pictured settings do it for me.

    Not for me!

I have set my options for both Rich Text, and tio use Word 2003 to edit and read messages. I have tried both 'Sending as RTF' and as 'Convert to HTML'.

In every case the message is returned to me as plain text.

Hmmmm. Tell ya what, send one of the problem emails to me and copy yourself. If we compare notes we can know for sure if the problem is in the way you receive the email or in the way it is transmitted.

Use the home email from the picture rather than via the forum and please include a copy of this link so I don't lose track of which thread.

Alan - I got your email and the typefaces were exactly what they were supposed to be with normal appearence for Georgia and Ariel, both regular and italics. My reply left here as blue 14pt comic sans ms.

Now to try and figure out which settings on your Outlook could be causing this.

Since it seems like you have an option ticked that I don't (see the picture) you might try that change. Also a repair of MS Office couldn't hurt.

Couldn't see any setting in your picture, but the fancy script came through this BBS ok, even though it was perhaps truncated on the right hand side.

    Top two lines read:

    ....my reply is 14pt(
absolutely not any sort of plain text thing. RTF would be my guess.

Note that the first line ended with the '('

Tried a repair and I still can't see my own rtf format when it comes back to me, as it still displays in plain text.

Loks like it must be an obscure setting, but just where that is beats me

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

Sorry about that. The truncation you saw was because I took a screen shot and cropped part of it to make a smaller picture.

The picture of my Outlook settings is in post #2.

Take a look at your IE settings as well. The browser is so integrated that it could be having an effect as well. Internet Options and set the first two program options to Word for HTML and Office Outlook for Email. Look thru the advanced settings too and see if anything looks related and might benefit from being turned on or off.

Looks like I'm going to have to admit defeat here! It seems that the posts go to the addressee with no problems, as you showed, but they do not come back to me in the format as sent.

My ISP is not to blame here, I suspect, because I do get regular emails in HTML format with no problems. I have looked at my 'Safe Senders' settings which seem to imply that any of my posts to myself as recipient are regarded as 'safe'.

There must be some obscure setting because I can receive third party formatted mail.

Ah well, I suppose plain text is always a good, univeral, option anyway.

The remaining problem is that now that I have found an itch, I just have to scratch it! :D

    Thanks for your help anyway.

Please post back if you do find a fix. My wife has suddenly figured out she has the same basic problem that you posted and I've had zero luck so far trying to get her running normally.

I wonder what the consequences of telling Mrs. Newt that she "wasn't running normally" would be? I'd hazard a guess: dismal.

Now here's a seasonal miracle, or somesuch.

Suddenly I can send and receive a copy in plain text, as before. :)

I can send and receive a copy in 'straight' HTML, unlike before when I could send but only receive in plain text.

I can send and receive a copy in Rich Text, unlike before when I could send but only receive in plain text. In this case I converted the rtf into HTML via Tools / Options / Mail Format / Internet Format, which is exactly the process I tried before and failed. I had tried a straight send and receive in rtf but that failed of course because my ISP server is not Exchange compatible.

    What have I done?

Nothing apart from one apparently unrelated act. When configuring the Word email editing window I needed to change the default language setting. This was done from the email compose window via Tools / Options / Set Languages, where I selected English (UK); the default was English (US). Resetting the default solved my Dictionary problem of course. I fail to see any connection betrween these two disparate settings but something seems to be fixed. :D

Incidentally, I had already configured Word and Outlook to English (UK) at the point of original installation and everything was fine. The strange thing was that while Word and the default Outlook email window used the UK format the Word email window defaulted to the US format. Another mystery and inconsistency but all seems to be well at the moment.

Will it last? Watch this space!!
