That probably means there is no program associated with those types of file formats so Windows doesn't know what to use to open them.

If you don't see a dot and three letters after the names of the files, open My Computer, go to the top of the window and click on Tools>Folder Options>View tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types," click OK. You should then be able to see the file extensions.

Then right click on one of the graphics files, left click on Open With and if there is no graphics program on the menu that pops up, click on "Choose program." Click once on the program in the list you want your graphics to open in, check the box at the bottom to tell it to always use that program to open that type of file, click OK. If you're not sure what program to use, Internet Explorer supports most graphics file types.

Do that for one file of each file type (jpg, bmp, gif, tif, etc.).

trying--I agree with everything Miz said. You probably already have another program you can alternatively use to open (see) those graphics files on your PC. That is MSPaint. The main difference between IE and Paint is that you can manipulate the images in Paint. If manipulating images is important to you, Irfanview (free) is an even better program. www.irfanview.com
But if ACD was a problem and you do not care to manipulate, you may be best off with IE.

trying--I would really like to encourage you to try what Miz suggested.
Perhaps print those instructions out to make them easy to follow. It really is quite a simple procedure and Miz has provided good instructions. If the term "graphics program" has turned you off, remember that IE is a good choice to at least see the images.

    oephan files

Welshjim, well tks for the encouragement however it will not work. I click to open in briefcase, or in ducoments I do not get (open with), I get( an update) or
if I click on a shortcut I get(wait while briefcase checks your files) in either case nothing happens, looks like a lost cause, I did brutalized the system when I used irfanview  but tks for the effort.

trying--Not sure I understand. Briefcase is not an image file, nor is My Documents. Miz' procedure is for image files such as those that end in jpg, bmp, gif, tif, etc. And Briefcase is not a program with which you can open image files. Maybe I misunderstand why you are mentioning My Briefcase.
However, I think I now see one omission in Miz' suggestion. You have to hold down Shift when you right click an image file. Otherwise you will not see Open With... .

trying--Thanks for posting back. So glad to hear the good news and that you did not give up.
When you run WinXP a while, it is easy to forget that Win98 required that Shift be held down when right-clicking a file in order to get the "Open With..." option.
    Enjoy those images!! :)
