I am having a problem opening some attachments. I just received a document that is a tiff file, and when I attempt to open it (from Outlook Express 6) my U-Lead Photo Explorer opens. It's full of pictures of items and fonts of sites I've visited, but not the attachment. I guess my main question is, how do I designate what program opens attachments? Thanks for your help!

The program used to open an attachment is determined by the file format of that attachment.

For example, a ".tiff" file is an image file and will therefore open in whatever program is set up on the computer to open image files. In your case, Ulead Photo Impact is set up to open .tiff files.

If you want to change the program that opens a particular attachment, save the attachment to the harddrive first, then, if you're using Windows 98 or ME, hold down the shift key while right clicking on the saved attachment (no need to hold down the shift key in WinXP), go to "Open With," click on whichever program in the list you want to open the file, click OK.

Note that opening an image file in, for example, a word processing program will display code, not the image.

I did not have Outlook Express before I updated Norton. I was able to open all of my attachments easily. Now I cannot open my grandchildren's pictures. How do I disable this feature and return to easy attachment opening? This will not let me open previously opened attachments. I receive a message that they were removed. How do I get them back?

Kristen if you are using OE 6 do the following:

Open OE/ and disable the settings for attachments by clicking on Options/Security and uncheck "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus ". Fair warning: Make certain you keep your virus definitions up to date and know what is in the attachment prior to opening it.

Kristen - it sounds like you are only keeping copies of the pictures as email attachments. If so, that is not a good idea. You need to save them somewhere as free-standing picture files.

When you have an email open, you can click on File and then the option to save the attachments (not using OE right now so don't remember the exact wording). You can then save copies to a folder on your hard drive. After you check to make sure things got saved where you thought and that you can open them OK, you can delete the original email. I think you will find email running faster after you do that.
