Usually I turn my PC off for the night via the Start menu...in the morning, I just press the power button on the front of the tower and everything comes back on. Recently I've noticed that the power button won't work unless I also disconnect the PC from the power outlet. After I plug the PC back into the wall, the power button works fine and the PC comes back on line. Connections are tight, no viruses....do I have a bad power button? [XP/SP2]

Could be bad, but suggest you try blowing dust out of the case with a can of compressed air and special attention to the area around the button, as well as the fans.

Check through the BIOS settings (it may be simpler to look through the motherboard manual). I wonder about a setting like "What to do when there is a power outage/restart ". Change this setting (through the list) and try a few restarts.

[BTW, after a few freezes with this system I reset the BIOS on it to "Default Settings ", I forgot that those settings default to "Wake on Ring ". Now every time the telephone rings the computer starts up...drat!...I will reset it next restart (sure! :D)].

You can test the power button itself by changing the Power Switch connector for the Reset Switch connector at the motherboard. The reset button will then become the power button.

Let us know if you do/don't have any luck.
