Since recently whenever I try to 'view offline' any of my "˜downloaded offline Web pages’ it displays the well known
“This Page cannot be Displayed" in spite of pressing "Refresh" and the fact that I have just synchronised the web sites and it displays "Updated" against them all. Under Tools>Internet Options I have allocated 20mb to Temporary Internet files and there are less than 1mb of cookies under Windows\Temporary Internet Files and IE Contents (incidentally IE Contents seem to consist of odd small GIF files which I assume I can delete?). I use Internet Explorer v6. Any suggestions as how to re-instate offline viewing would be most welcome because I can't help feeling the problem is somehow of my own making. Thankyou in anticipation.
    Regards,

Are you clicking File > Work Offline before trying to view your offline content?

Thankyou PeteC for the reply. Up to a month ago I didn't have to click Work Offline, I simply clicked the "Offline" website then pressed "Stay Offline ". However in my latest attempts I have done what you are suggesting and still get "This Page Unavailable" or "Web Page Unavailable Offline ".
Two weeks ago I was still using IE5 and for the first time in 5 years decided to delete the majority of the cookies I had collected but they would not delete so after trying alternative methods, under IE5 Tools>Options I finally reduced the memory available from 64mb to 1mb and this did the trick. Funnily enough from that point on I was able to delete cookies as I felt the need (Why?....Sometimes I have a problem or a warning and often they magically disappear on their own and recently I learned that rather than Microsoft having to explain everything to everybody it has developed a way of pre-emptive programming which does all the troubleshooting and effects the cure without the user's participation. That is why I am no longer surprised by anything... although I have been hoping MS would have cured this problem too!!). Anyway to continue...It was after reducing memory to 1mb that I first noticed my present problem then a week ago I upgraded to IE6 and in spite of allocating 20mb I am still having this problem. Now I am wondering could there be any other Option I selected under !E6 Tools which prevents a cure although I cannot think of one? Under Security I chose Medium.
Sorry for ranting on but I am mentioning anything which I feel might help.

I must admit that I make no use of the 'Offline' facility so I am working a little in the dark here.

First suggestion - go to Help > Contents and Index in IE and select the Index tab and type in 'offline'. Check out the info given there.

Offline pages are stored in the Windows\offline Web Pages folder and the setting for Temporary Internet Files really has no bearing on offline content - AFAIK

I find it best to set IE to empty all Temporary Internet Files on exit - Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Security section.

As far as security settings are concerned look no further than

How to surf the Internet more safely with Internet Explorer

With these settings you will need to add sites to the Trusted Zone for them to work as expected - fine if you trust them - downloads in particular.

There is one possible solution to your problem, which may seem to you to be totally unrelated, but which often works - rid your m/c of spy ware/malware.

If you have not already done so download Spybot and Ad-aware . Immediately update their reference files and run Spybot before Ad-aware and delete all they find. Also download and run Cwshredder

I can't guarantee a solution, but running these programs will at least clean up your m/c and should be updated and run on a regular basis.

I, like Pete, am shooting in the dark(probably more-so), but on your TIF settings, are you set to look for updated versions of stored pages automatically?

Thankyou PeteC and noahdfear for your replies. After reading your suggestions I made ready to implement them but being the supreme optimist I first went to the Windows>Offline Web pages, went offline and then did what I have being doing for the past 7 days, namely trying to read "offline" any one of my 42 offline Web pages all of which are marked "updated" except for 8 which are marked "error downloading" or "some errors downloading ". Glory be - the first one came up trumps and by the time I had finished 27 were readable. My first inclination was to to sneak back and unsubscribe then fade into obscurity before anyone could accuse me of "finger problem ". However I cannot think of anything constructive I have done to redeem the situation. It did occur to me that I may have a virus so carried out a full check and the AVG gave my computer a clean bill of health. All I can do is apologise for taking up your valuable time.

    Pat - stick around.

The only folks on here who have not seen 'miracle cures' or 'voodoo fixes' are folks who only got their first computer last week and it worked fine.

Anyone who has messed with them for long has seen this sort of thing happen time and again.

Thankyou once again PeteC, Zander and Newt for the replies. Zander's reference to "wonderful world of Windows" and Newt's reference to "miracle cures" got me thinking more about my previous reference to "MS pre-emptive programming" I read about recently.

This morning, halfway through the boot-up I got a warning the computer couldn't find the mouse. I re-booted, this time no problem with the mouse but instead a warning there was a problem with the Display followed by it showing the Display's Dialogue Box from the Control Panel. I guessed what
at happened (because it once did the same thing some a month ago) was that mysteriously the number of colours had changed from 256 to 16 but when it presented it to me on screen it had corrected itself and replaced it with the correct number 256 thus there was ostensibly nothing wrong with it now, a situation which would perplex many users. Problem is, it doesn't tell you
it has "fixed" it so most people might have no idea what to do! So could it be that the first maxim of troubleshooting is, "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to see if End Task comes up ". If it doesn't then save any work if possible then press "Ctrl+Alt+Delete to re-boot ".
