Help, Offline files were set up and synchronised???, then turned off.
It appears that the server version does not have all the files.
After turning offline files back on, the offline files folder says that cetain files are local only.
But when you try to open/copy - they are not there.

Is there any way to trace where they have gone.

    Thanks in advance

All sorts of possible causes. Take a look Here for some good background info on offline files.

If you don't have enough local space allocated for your offline files you can run into some interesting problems.

The fact that the server copies are 'gone' is not a good sign. Are there backups of the server from a time when you know the files were there?

Thanks for that, but I think they have gone.

The issue was that the laptop was in domain 'X' syncing with active directory server. A power outage caused corruption on the server (but could synced files OK). Company installed new server and changed to domain 'Y'.
Original server was demoted, Laptop synced files to old server (local files new) and no errors were reported.
Offline files turned off, Laptop moved to domain 'Y', Offline files back on.
Then offline files reported only local version, but cannot open it.

    Thanks

You may well be right about the files being toast. Shame the IT folks did things the way they did. I don't know what they were using for backup but if they had a decent system, there should be tapes from before the problem started that have good copies (old but intact) of the files you need. We certainly maintain a few months of backup tapes for our file server.

Are you able to locate files with a size about a few Kb on your PC but just can't open them?

Also as a reality check, download Agent Ransack and use it to search for the files you are supposed to have. It's a very smart search engine and lots better than any of the native stuff on XP.
