    Hello All -

I'm having a problem with OE6 sending mail but only from my account. When I try to send a message I get a dialog box with the followng - "The message could not be sent. An error has occurred."

With the exception of our account 'names', my wife's account is set up exactly the same way as mine and hers sends mail flawlessly.

I have deleted my account and rebuilt it several times. After doing that I had been able to send mail from my account for a while but for no apparent reason it would quit sending again shortly thereafter. Well, until yesterday anyway. Now not even rebuilding the account works but my wife's account is fine.

I'm stumped and  . Any ideas out there?

    Hi Newt -

    Thanks for the reply.

    OS Version - 4.10.2222B (Win98 SE)

IE/OE6 sp1 from the update CD that MS offered last year. All available updates that came after the CD have been downloaded & installed from the MS Update site.

Up until Saturday, after deleting and rebuilding my account in OE, I could send mail for a while before it quit sending. Now I can't send anything from my account at all. My wife's account seems to be uneffected and works as it should. Both accounts are set up identically except for the account 'names'.

    I remain  and !!

    Have you tried Repairing IE/OE?

Add/Remove Programs > Internet Explorer > Remove and select the Repair option in the dialogue box.

    Hi Pete -

Thanks for the post. I guess I should have mentioned this earlier but in my frustration I neglected to. Sorry.

I tried the "repair" of IE with the add/remove tool - twice. There is no difference in OE's behavior in sending mail from my account. My wife's account remains functional.

I'm wondering if an uninstall/reinstall might be my only option at this point. If I go that route will my address book, message store, etc. be affected or compromised?

I don't send all that much e-mail but I am presently communicating with some people about an old outboard motor I have and this is getting to be a real pita.

    Thanks for your help.

    Mike

*edit* - It just dawned on me that this behavior started about the same time that I updated MS Office 2000 with sr1a. I don't see how but could that be the culprit?

Maybe the sent items.dbx file is corrupt. Try deleting the one for your account and then give it a try. OE will create a new one the first time you start it.

    Hi Zander -

Thanks for the post. I tried deleting the Sent Items.dbx and restarted OE as you suggested. No joy. I restored Sent Items.dbx to OE and deleted it again, warm-booted the computer for good measure and tried again. That didn't help either. After a very small temper tantrum, I permanently restored the Sent Items.dbx back to OE so I didn't accidentally lose it.

I am having some trouble with my keyboard recording each and every keystroke on the screen but after recreating my account more than a dozen times you would think I would eventually get lucky and give this thing something it would be happy with. (Kinda like a monkey recreating all the works of Shakespeare on a typewriter.) - Keyword: EVENTUALLY.

If Kensington would get off their duffs and send me what they promised me a month ago maybe this would clear up but . . . I really doubt that that is my problem here. Maybe it's time for me to just give up on IE/OE and start using Mozilla.

It is possible that the Outbox.dbx is corrupt - I suggest you delete this - with OE closed. As before OE will recreate it when restarted.

FYI - your Address Book can be backed up (exported) - open Address Book from the icon on the top menu bar and go File > Export > Address Book (WAB) and save it to a location on your HD. At any time in the future File > Import in Address Book will restore that version.

Same applies to Accounts - Tools > Accounts - highlight account > Export. Similarly they can be imported.

I've not used OEQuick Backup, but it is recommended by several on the Board.

I think my problem may be contained somewhere in this article.

    So far I have -
    • Deleted and rebuilt my OE account more than a dozen times. No help.

    • Backed up OE (with two identities) using OE Quick Backup as mentioned above.

    • Then I uninstalled and reinstalled OE (from the MS Update CD) and restored everything with OEQB. Same problem.

I think that I will try exporting and importing my message store and address book into a new install of OE. After it is reinstalled I'll allow it to open and create a new Main Identity before I do the importing of the message store and .wab.

If all that doesn't fix the problem - Mozilla, here I come.

I'll post back with the results asap.

Quite possible that you restored the problem too.

Okay - Here is what I did. At least, I think it's what I did because I'm old and I have slept since then.

    • I fired up MS Outlook for the first time ever and imported the address book and message store into it.
    • I removed OE with the 'Add/Remove programs' feature in the Control Panel.
    • Went into the registry and deleted both of the {GUID}s I found there.
    • Downloaded, installed and updated OE (sp1) from the MS Windows Update page.
    • With just a little trepidation, I started OE and let it create an Idendity.
    • I imported the addess book and message store back into OE from Outlook. Everything seems to have made the trip unscathed.
    • With squinted eyes and trembling fingers, I composed a 2-letter e-mail to my wife and clicked on the "Send" button.
    • Voila !! I didn't get a dialog box telling me that the message could not be sent because there was an error.
This may have been a roundabout (and not the 'accepted') way to solve the problem, but it worked for me and that's all I care about. :D

However, I have one thing now that I have never seen before and I'd sure like to know how to turn it OFF. When I send an e-mail (yes, SEND) I'm getting a dialog box telling me that some people have their computers set to not accept HTML mail and it asks me to choose how I want to send it - HTML or plain text. I have looked under Tools>Options in OE and nothing I have done there seems to help. :(

Don't quit on me now Pete, Newt and Zander. Thanks for the help, so far. :)

Thanks for the details .... unconventional, may be, but it worked and that's the bottom line :)

Tools > Options > Send > Mail Sending Format. Selecting text is the most secure method - for the recipient.

    Thanks Pete.

Naturally, the one and only place I didn't look. Now, all is well and I can get some sleep. :D :D
