    I have a small problem whereas when I want to send a link or page from OE 6, Netscape 6.2 starts up. I checked the preferences in OE/IE and they are set to OE. IE is main browser.

    The reason for two browsers is that I prefer IE and wife like Netscape.

    How do I get Netscape to stop starting when trying to send a link/page?

    Thank you in advance for any and all help.

    Right click the IE Desktop Icon and select Properties > Program Tab > and be sure the box is tagged that says, "Internet Explorer should check to see that it is the default browser. "

    If not, tag it and then open the browser. It should ask if you want to make it the default browser. Answer Yes and maybe you'll get rid of that problem

    Other than that, I can't think of anything unless you want to consider getting a divorce. Not the wife, the Netscape!

    Cheers. :)

    Thank you but that was one of the first things I did. Matter of fact just got done re checking it. Something that I did notice is that when in OE and I click on a link it doen't open the webpage.

    Don't think wife will let me get rid of Netscape... may have to divorce wife:)

    Thanks anyway.

    First open Netscape, go to Edit | Preferences, select Mail and Newsgroups in the left pane and make sure you UNcheck the option in the settings window to use Netscape Mail as the default mail application.

    If that has already been tried then maybe this will help, taken from http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/defaultl.htm

    First, in Outlook Express, go to Tools | Options and set OE as the default mail and news program.

    If the options are grayed out that means that OE already thinks it is the default.

    Then go to Control Panel | Internet Options | Programs tab and select OE as the default mail and news program. If it is not available in the drop down list do the following:

    Go to Start | Run and type this command, with the quotes and spaces:

    "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg

    and then make sure that OE is selected as the default mail program in both IE and OE.

    If that isn't enough, see this article:
    "Send To" and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as Default:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q306098

    Alice, thank you for the information. Tried everything including installing the new Netscape and still kinda have same problem...now when I click on a link to send, I get no email program.

    It should be noted that OE6 works fine by itself and that everything points to OE as the default mail.

    You mean when you go to File Send Page or click on a mailto link it does not launch Outlook Express or ANY mail program?

    Does this happen when you are in Netscape or in Internet Explorer, or both?

    I saw your thread in the Netscape forum:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13318

    Do a FIND on *mapi32*.* (include the "* ") and tell us what files you find, name of file, file size folder location and file version (from r-click, Properties, version tab). You should have at least one file named mapi32.dll and possibly some backups with similar names.

    Also tell us what version of Windows you are running since that might make a difference.

    Sometimes with problems like this, you need to reboot between steps, so if you rename mapi32.dll you might need to restart the computer before a new one could be generated which is what I assume should have happened from the other thread.

    Alice,

    First let me say thank you for getting back so soon. I'm using Win2K, IE 6.028 SP1. Did a search and came up w/the following:

    1. Folder mapi32.dll - C:\program files\support.com\backup\ma\mapi32

    when this is opend I get the following:
    131072_589 adal... 33kb

    2. mapi32.dll - C:\winnt\system32 128 kb application version 1.0.2536.0 service pack 3

    I also have in same forlder (system32) Mapistub.dll & Mapisvc (text file) which gives the following info:

    [Default Services]
    MSFAX XP=Fax Mail Transport
    [Services]
    MSFAX XP=Fax Mail Transport
    [MSFAX XP]
    PR_DISPLAY_NAME=Fax Mail Transport
    Providers=MSFAX XPP
    PR_SERVICE_DLL_NAME=FAXXP.DLL
    PR_SERVICE_SUPPORT_FILES=FAXXP.DLL
    PR_SERVICE_ENTRY_NAME=ServiceEntry
    PR_RESOURCE_FLAGS=SERVICE_SINGLE_COPY|SERVICE_NO_PRIMARY_IDENTITY
    [MSFAX XPP]
    PR_PROVIDER_DLL_NAME=FAXXP.DLL
    PR_RESOURCE_TYPE=MAPI_TRANSPORT_PROVIDER
    PR_RESOURCE_FLAGS=STATUS_NO_DEFAULT_STORE
    PR_DISPLAY_NAME=Fax Mail Transport
    PR_PROVIDER_DISPLAY=Fax Mail Transport

    Hope this is of some help. Oh by the way, created a new profile in Netscape but that didn't help. Still unable to send a link or page while in IE6

    That's interesting. I have IE/OE 5.5sp2 and my mapi32.dll (In Win95b, Windows\System folder) shows the same
    size 128kb and version 1.0.2536.0 as you do, also I show Service Pack 3
    Extended MAPI 1.0 for Windows NT
    Copyright © 1986-1999 Microsoft Corp.

    Possibly the easiest thing to try at this point would be a reinstall of Outlook Express? Someone with OE6 or Win2k would be better to help you there but I assume you can do that from Windows Update?

    Ray,

    I thought of something simple that might just work. Seems the the Internet Options Programs tab (at least in older IE versions) can erroneously display the mail program. You need to change the E-Mail and News programs shown on the Programs tab from Outlook Express to ANOTHER program in the drop-down list, click APPLY. then go back and change the Email and News programs BACK to Outlook Express. Here is the quote from the Internet Explorer 3.02 readme. Internet Mail is the IE3.02 version of Outlook Express so maybe this will work for you.
    I thought of it because somehow hubby deleted the Internet Explorer icon from the desktop and when I checked in Internet Options, Advanced tab, the option to show Internet Explrer on the desktop was already checked even though the icon had disappeared. I simply UNchecked the option, clicked APPLY, then REchecked the option and clicked APPLY again. That did the trick.

    Alice,

    Have the Email & Newsgroups greyed out (both have Outlook Express in them) and also Internet Call (has Net Meeting).

    When you said 'greyed out' I thought you might have meant the "Make Default" buttons in Outlook Express Tools | Options (those buttons are supposed to be greyed out if OE already thinks it is the default).

    If you are talking about the Control Panel | Internet Options | Programs tab and you are unable to use the drop-down lists for E-Mail and Newsgroups then you can try this, from the first link I gave you before:

    Would like to thank everyone for their help. Have managed to get email straightend out but I don't know how I did it. I don't even know what set it off to begin with. Not only did my email program go but I started w/explorer.exe problems. "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. Error log created. "

    Used WinRescure 2k to restore backup of registry (that I knew was good) and Ontrack's fix-it repair disk. Now I can send a page/link in the correct email account and I think I got rid of the error message.:)

    Hi Ray,

    Thanks for posting back with the solution

    I'm not familiar with Ontrack or WinRescue but I do know enough to keep current registry and configuration file backups...I guess you do too
    ;)
