    Gentle people,

One of my tasks is to look after the PC in our bridge club. Last week they called on me because "... the NumLock key doesn't seem to work ... "! Rather quickly I found out I had to deal with a "Coolwebsearch" infection and I managed to get rid of the constantly redirecting IE and got it back to normal. Updated Windows (XP Home), ran AdAware, SpyBots, CWShredder, you name it - and finally got rid of the annoying "SYSDPT" message with the help of Hijackthis. Now everything seems to be back to normal - all the definded userids behave as they should do - except the one "who dunnit ".

In this userid one hits the NumLock key and everything appears normal - the LED toggles on or off as desired, but when "on" the keys in the numpad seem to be disabled - they do nothing at all! When toggled "off" everything is normal.

I am sorry, I am at wits end - no idea whatsoever where to look! Any help will be appreciated!

Details: 2GHz Intel Processor, 512MB internal, 60GB external, MS Windows XP Home Edition with all updates on SP1 (now!), MS Office and a bridge program to get the results for all our tournaments. If you need more I will be happy to conply!

    Thanks a lot in advance!

First thing to try (because it is quick, safe, easy, and fixes lots of strange things) is to click on start, on run then
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    and OK.

It will ask you for the XP CD if it finds any damaged or missing system files and needs to fix things.

It runs very silently and you'd have to check your event logs after it finishes to see specifically what changes were made.

If that fails to set things right then assume you are dealing with a corrupt user profile since the others seem to do well.

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile will walk you thru making a new profile and then getting most of the settings from the bad one before you make it go away.

    Thank you very much Newt!

I will proceed with your second suggestion (and my fallback plan ...) and define a new userid .... I nourished some hope to find a simpler solution - but this didn't work out.

    Thank you again!
