    Hi,
I am having lots of trouble being able to install anything new to my computer.
No matter what I try to install it goes thru the process up to the install wizard. When the hash marks reach the end of the first part of install Wizard I always get a message stating that the install could not complete and in large letters "UNEXPECTED FAILURE ".
I was told to check my System File Checker.
The System File Checker said I had 2 corrupted file in the direct link library "rcltspx.dll" and setupx.dll.
How do I fix these files, or are they not my real problem? :(

blakston, Is that the correct spelling ? RCLTSPX.DLL ?
I do not have this and cannot find references to it anywhere.
Have you Adaware to clean out spyware ?
Have you a registry cleaner ?
    If so run them both.
No success ? Post again with more info.
    regards

    Hi Merlin,
    Thank you for the reply.
Sorry, it is rpcltspx.dll and setupx.dll.
I somehow didn't hit the p hard enough first go around.
Where do I find a registry cleaner and Adware?
Anythings worth a try that is designed to fix things I know nothing about.

I would extract them files. You need your Win98 CD. Just open system file checker again, select extract. You'll have to search for the files, put them in your primary hard drive, ie... "c:/windows/system" folder..

    Hi aleekat,
Merlin is going to send me the files for replacement. So I will try that first. Of course I would like to eliminate the corrupt files so I will take your advice and try to figure exactly how to access them to get rid of them. Do I type their name in my Find Folder in the Start list? And then just delete them or extract them to somewhere easy to destroy them in?

You can just replace over top, but if you want, just find, then delete. I would probably just rename to old or something like that.

    Hi aleekat,
When I try to reinstall Windows from the CD I get the following message.......... "A mismatched Setupx.dll is loaded. Setup cannot continue. Quit all Windows and MS-DOS based Programs, and then try again. Or, quit Windows and then run setup from the MS-DOS Prompt.
    Message SU0349 "

I have tried several times with the same results.

It appears that you are trying to re-install from within Windows. Or at least a Hard Drive boot up. And even if it did work it will not work properly. Not with the errors you are already getting.

Have you tried booting to a Floppy startup disk with CDROM support and running setup from the X:\ Win98 folder ?

If you have Windows ME than I believe path would be X:\Win9x.

X being the letter asigned to the CDROM.

Just make sure that during the install the Windows goes back into the existing folder.

Re-installing from the hard drive boot up does not work well. Some Windows files do not get overwritten properly. Especially if you are already getting errors.

There is one problem that might come up. I am not sure which version of Windows 98 you have. 98 FE UPGRADE is OK. 98 SE full or UPGRADE is OK. If you have the SE UPDATE CD you are out of luck. 98 FE must be re-installed first.

I ran into this problem with the SE UPDATE It needed to be re-installed from Windows and Windows would not run. I was just plain SOL and had to start over with 98 FE. No way was I going to do that so I just went and got the SE UPGRADE.

Now if you happen to have an OEM machine ( HP, DELL, Gateway etc. ) then my ideas may not work. I only owned one OEM machine. And never again.

    Hi Billy Bob,
My machine was put together by a knowledgeable friend from various vendors in 2000.
It had Windows 98SE installed on it from the start with a Windows 98SE CD that I am in possesion of.
I am trying to Reinstall with the original Windows 98SE CD in my CD-ROM Drive.
Your suggestions sound reasonable and like a possible solution. By any chance could you give me a step by step procedure to follow. I am getting more familiar with the terminology and workings of computers but I can see I have a long way to go till I can understand where to go and how to get there.

I'm a little confused here. I thought your original question was how to replace the corrupted files, not reinstall Windows. Did you ever try replacing the corrupt files?

The original Problem was " Nothing will install "

I don't believe Just replacing those two files will fix the problem. There is more wrong than meets the eye.

And unless those two files were replaced with the proper ones things could get worse. They deffinetly should not be replaced from another machine. That can be a very disasterous procedure. And those two files may not really be the problem anyway.

Before I go any further I must ask.

Do you have a Win98 SE startup disk that will boot the machine and give you access to the CDROM ??

And check to make sure that the machine will boot directly to the floppy and not to the HD first.

    This is a MUST.

And make sure you have either the SE Full or UPGRADE CD.

One this is done we will take it from there.

Hane you by any chance installed any older Sierra Software ?

Some of it did a great job of causing this problem. I have two pieces of older Sierra software that won't install because it says something about wrong Setupx.

Just for the giggles of it I just ran SFC on three machines.

Every one said that setupx.dll was corrupt which is a bunch of Bullcrap. If it were I would be getting error messages or some other indication of problems.

As I said before unless SFC is run after EVERY change, add/remove software it can not be trusted.

Aleekat,,,,,My original problem was and is nothing will new install on my computer. When I ran System File Checker 2 Direct Link Library files came up indicated as corrupt. I am trying to figure out why I cannot install any new software on my computer anymore,. Trying to fix the corrupted files(since one of them was setupx.dll) seemed like a possibly good place to start.

Billy Bob,,,,,,,by Windows 98SE startup disk do you mean the CD I used to install Windows SE with? So,,,,,,,if that is it........how do I boot up with it instead of the installed WindowsSE?
I do have the full original CD WindowsSE but when I try to use it to do a reinstall I get Error messages.

The setupx.dll error message is a very well known and very well documented glitch. It will occur 100% of the time in a Win98se install checked by SFC and you can fix it or leave it alone - it doesn't make any difference to your system.

That is what I figured when I found SFC to say it was corrupt on all three machine.

    blakston6286

The startup disk that I refer to is a Floppy that can be made by going to Start-settings-control panel-add/remove and selecting the Startup tab and creating one. Actaully one should have been made during the install of Windows.

I firmly believe that all users of Windows should have one just in case all else fails or they do not have a Bootable CD. I myself have both a floppy disk and a CD startup.

To get the machine to boot from the CROM you need to go into the BIOS settings, search for and change the boot sequence to A: CDROM, C. ( if that choice is available. )

I believe ( but not 100% sure ) that you need to get the CD out before Windows restarts itself for the first time. I do know the floppy has to come out. It tells you anyway during the install.

After booting the choice ( I believe with the full version ) is yours whether to re-install, format or what ever. I am guessing here as I only have the UPGRADE CD which is not bootable.

If you do an overtop install just make sure that Windows goes back into the existing folder.

    Nothing Will Unstall

OK,,,,,,,I got that the SFC message of a corrupted setupx.dll is a normal thing.
So that is not the cause of my problem........My problems still is,,,,,,everytime I try to install any new software I get the exact same message and the software refuses to install as a result.
The message is........ "An error occurred while launching the setup. Unexpected failure"
I get no options or explanations where to go or what to do about it. I am simply pushed out of the possibility of installing my new softwares.
My question maybe should be........Where can I go or what can I do to diagnose exactly what is causing this problem so I can repair the CAUSE and stop being the EFFECT of this situation?

Empty C:\WINDOWS\TEMP and then try the install again.
