I realise this will open up a can of worms and a multitude of varying opinions..but a mans gotta start somewhere.

At 70 I am looking at purchasing my first notebook/laptop computer.

I do not want to spend more than AU$2000 preferably around AU$1700 mark.

I would prefer a unit with say 500+FSB
    Good battery life
    Multicard reader
    DVD RW
Facilities to connect to TV and FM radio

Perhaps we could start with the product reliability factor from experienced users.

    Thanks

I bought my first laptop a year ago, almost to the day.
It's a Winbook v240: P4 3.06 GHz w/ HT, 512 ram, dvd-cdrw combo. Bought one for my oldest daughter as well. Both have been sent once to manufacturer to replace the motherboard and other stuff. I knew this model would have some issues but the price was too good to be passed up on at the time. $949.00 each.

I've done a lot of work fixing other peoples' computers and by far, the most reliable laptops I've come across are IBMs.

You should conside these things: (in no particular order of importance after #1)
    1. wants & needs.
    2. price.
    3. service (where to get serviced if necessary & any shipping costs)
    4. what you will use it for and how much usage.
