My DVD/CD-RW drive is not playing audio CDs. Everything else seems to work fine, as the PC will play MP3s, game sounds, etc. I have always assumed that this is simply because a cable is not attached from the CD to the M/B, but I thought I'd see if there are any other possible causes - it's a hassle to get at my PC, since my room is rather small, so it's at the bottom of a pile of miscellaneous books, magazines, and whatever else I put there that stays put. :D

    Cheerz!

Hi Ryder, May not be relevant, but had this problem a while ago.
I had to swap the sound card slot on the mobo and restart.
    regards

Has your DVD/CD-RW ever played CD's?

No cable = no sound - check it out :) You need an audio cable from the DVD/CD-RW to your sound card - or mobo if the sound is embedded (on a chip)

You failed to mention the O/S - Later Versions of Windows allow "digital audio over IDE" and do not require the ATAPI cable when this option is enabled.

In Win98, there is a setting that applies to CD's, where as you have two Cd drives, or just replaced one. Go into Control Panel\Multimedia, click on the CDRom tab, look for the line Default CD-ROM drive for playing CD Music, check to see which Drive letter is selected.
There is also a checkbox for Enable digital CD Audio for this CD-ROM device there. If digital audio is not available, this will be greyed.
