I find that SpeedDisk is runnig a lot slower on 98SE than it did on Win 95a. Is this normal?
Also it says it is says Converting Application Start Data when it starts. Before it just showed optimizing folders and/or files.
The HD has just Windows, Netscape and Norton Systemworks installed on a formatted HD. Before there was a lot of software installed which I have not yet re-installed.

Also, I need to know how to place the Swap File at the beginning of HD. Don't remember how to do that.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ann :(

Windows 98 runs a program by default, called Taskmon, which monitors the disk activity as each application runs on the PC. This info is logged in files under \Windows\Applog (a hidden directory).

When defrag (or Speedisk) runs, it uses this info to optimize the starting of these programs. And does this by moving them closer to the front of the disk, and by laying out their clusters in the same sequence as they are accessed during startup.

Swapfile : Properties Button > Options > Optimize swap file

Thanks for your reply. I am so happy to learn that the Converting Application Start Data is normal.

I do have the Optimize Swap File checked, but following the legend colors, the brown is for he swap and that it definitly not being placed at the beginning as it used to. It is pretty much near the end.

Do I have to first go into Virtual Memory and do something there? In Win 95 I rememberplacing some numbers there. I have 104 RAM. Any suggestions?

It's been a long time since I have done this, but I "think" that is all that is required.!

    Maybe someone else knows better?

The Norton utilities has something called "Norton optimization wizzard ". Run this and it will place your swap file first on the drive. At least it did on mine. I have Norton systemworks 2002.

Thanks. I'll try that. I had 95 so fine tuned and now I will have to start over with 98sE...LOL!

I have Norton SystemWorks 2000, but I know that on Win 95 I had the swap file first. How I did it, I do not remember.

I will post back if the optimization works.

Thanks so much. Using the Disk Optimizer did the job.

I had an option to optimize the Registry, but I did not select it. I do not remember ever doing that. Should I?

Also, does anyone have an up-to-date exclusions list for the virus scanning?

Thanks so much to all for the great help!

I had an option to optimize the Registry

That is the only thing other than WinDoctor that I use from Norton Utilities. I use both after installing or un-installing software.

I also only use SpeedDisk to put a fixed size swap file ( if and when I change it ) at the front of a partition and use Windows ME defrag for everything else.

    As a suggestion only.

Use either SpeedDisk or Windows defrag only. Do not use both. They fight like the porverbial cat & dog.

SpeedDisk may also move files that Windows does not like to have moved.

I myself do not run the Windows Task Monitor either so that makes a difference too. With the newer and faster Hard Drives I find it to do nothing other then take up resources and disk space for the Applogs folder. And make Defrag take longer.

    Glad you got some joy...

Yes I used the registry optimizer also.

Agree with Billy Bob. Use one defrag or the other but not both. I liked Speed Disk but now I'm trying another one for 30 days. It's a $40 program after trial but I really like it so far. It does a lot more than Defrag. Here is the place to check it out.

Hi Billy Bob - It's been a long time!

Good to know that I can use the Registry Optimizer.

Regarding the change to the swap file, do you mean setting the Virtual Memory settings to fixed min and max? I did that in Win95 but have not yet done it in 98SE. Should I? I have 106 RAM so 250/250 woulc be right?

Yes, I only use SpeedDisk....and if Windows doesn't like it....tough...hahaha! Can it really cause a conflict? It worked great with Win95!

Thanks for the information, but for now I will pass. I have enough work reinstalling my software and downloading updates.

Yes it has been awhile. Too much going on here and most of it not good.

We just got home Sat. from a funeral in Maryland and Monday morning my Stepson had a heart attack. And if that is not enough I came home with a bad cold.

Regarding the change to the swap file, do you mean setting the Virtual Memory settings to fixed min and max? I did that in Win95 but have not yet done it in 98SE. Should I? I have 106 RAM so 250/250 woulc be right?

Yes to setting the swap file. I only set the min setting and it is on a partition other then C: And let Speedisk put it up front.

However if you do set it to fixed you do not want to let the Optimizer touch it. It may ( and has ) wound up in a different place AND SIZE each time. I do not let it check drives for speed and optimized the swap file. I only let it do the registry.

In other words. " I set it an forget it. " I have it set to 400 min.

Can it really cause a conflict? It worked great with Win95!

As fas as I know only if you try to use both. Yes it does work well in 98 also.

Billy Bob - Hope your stepson is feeling better very soon. It never rains that it does not pour.

Bmoore1129 - Thanks for the link. Let's see what I can learn.
