Norton 2004 headaches

Norton 2004 won't stop scanning outgoing mail even though I checked that box. And, it won't allow my Kazaa to connect anymore, and other problems. Symantec support keeps telling me to do things that don't help. I paid a lot for this thing and am not happy, what can I do? Anybody else have this trouble?

 

Which version of Norton do you have? NIS or AV?

Why do you NOT want it to scan outgoing mail? Yes, you can shut it off (follow Symantec's instructions and reboot) but WHY? It only takes a couple of seconds, and provides an additional layer of security for people receiving your emails.

If you have to use Kazaa, which is loaded with spyware and other nasties, you can allow it through Norton by clicking on firewall, then configure internet enabled programs (I have 2003 so it might be a bit different) and choose from automatic, permit, block or custom.

What are the other problems you are having?

Generally speaking, Norton defaults on the side of safety, however it is fully configurable (is that a word??) as long as you know how to set it. Post back with more info and we can help you get it the way you want it.

btw, If I were you, I would run Spybot and AdAware and let them delete all they find, and I would find an alternative file sharer, like WinMX, and stay away from Kazaa.

 

I have Norton 2004 anti virus and internet security.
I have resolved most of the other small issues.
And, I got Kazaa to connect by disabling the Norton firewall.
I use Kazaalite, there is no spyware with that version.
I run spybot regularly.
The main aggravation now is that Norton will not stop scanning outgoing mail. I got a digital camera for Christmas and the pictures I have taken and am sending to family do not need scanned in my opinion. If I attach more than one pic the outgoing scan takes a very long time, meanwhile it gives me errors on the mail page, and I can't do anything else on the computer until that email is gone. An ordinary email without pictures takes no time. I uncheck "scan outgoing" on Norton, but it still does. Symantec support is telling me stuff about creating rules, but it seems very complicated. Everybody else I know unchecks "scan outgoing" and it works.

Being online without a firewall is foolish, and defeats the whole purpose of having a firewall in the first place. Being on Kazaa anything, with or without a firewall, is asking for trouble, period.

If your pics are taking that long to scan, then the resolution is too high, and you need to either adjust your camera settings or edit the file size of the picture, usually done with the software the camera came with. People you send pics to will appreciate your attention to the file sizes, especially if they have slow ISP connections or pay by the minute for their online time. A good rule of thumb for sending digital pictures, or any file attachment, is to keep the file sizes between 50 and 100 K. I would hazard a guess that your pics have an "M" behind their number? Also, make sure that the pics are being saved as .jpg format, and not .bmp.

I don't know why Norton is refusing to not scan outgoing mail, but I think you should have it scanning all mail, in and outgoing, anyway. For more info, read this page from

None of my pictures are larger than 100 kb
None of them have M after the number, and they are all jpg.
I am not online without a firewall, WinXP has a competant firewall.
My previous Norton..2003 version, had no problems, and none of my friends who have Norton 2004 have this problem. Symantec support says it is a known issue and are trying to help, but I will need a technician to wade through their suggestions about creating rules. I find it frustrating, and was just wondering if anybody else encountered the same thing.
