I have always customized my Word toolbars and always saved them in Normal, but I find that the original template still lurks someplace on the computer. The original occasionally loads and sometimes (for no apparent reason) I am asked whether I want to save changes to normal.dot. Does anyone know how to permanently get rid of the original template.

I may be off course here, but I think the customised toolbars are saved elsewhere. I have a number of templates which I use regularly and also use customised toolbars. Any change to the toolbars are applied globally - both to normal.dot and to the template.dot's.

I suspect that you occasionally make basic changes to your formatting, etc of specifics which are part of normal.dot - hence the question from Word when you save.

To recreate normal.dot simply delete it - Word will recreate it the next time it is opened.

Using Word 2000, but they are similar.

Thanks. I hadn't realized that the template was saved locally and globally. I have saved the file accordingly.
