I use Netscape 7.01 and all has been going great (amazingly) until this morning when I started getting an error: "no XBL binding for browser ". I've read in the archives that this may be related to themes and to use the modern theme. This hasn't helped my problem. :( Does anyone have any further advice as to what might be causing this? My husband deleted a bunch of temporary internet files last night in an attempt to help my computer. Could that have done it? Should I reload Netscape with my disc? Thanks for any help.

    Welcome to the Forum, Charltay!

    Hi charltay,

You are correct in assuming that the XBL error is associated with a problem in the Theme you're using. Were you using a Theme other than Modern prior to the error?

If so, and switching back to the Modern Theme showed no positive results, then I would suggest creating a new Profile. Themes are a part of your Profile, so reinstalling Netscape would doubtfully have any effect on the problem.

Here are guidelines on creating a new Profile: Create a New Profile

Let us know if you have further questions.

Hi Ramona! Thanks for the help. I've been using the default "modern" theme ever since I installed Netscape 7.01 (not changing it even once). So I "m really baffled by this. I went and highlighted the "modern" theme and hit ok thinking that might help (although I doubted it because I've been using the modern theme all along). Of course it did nothing.

Do you find it strange that this error would pop up all of a sudden when I haven't done anything with the themes?

I've never created a new profile before, but could give it a try if you still think that is the best way to go given what I've just said.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

I just noticed something and wanted to add it in case it might help to figure out what is going on. I only get the xbl error the first time I try to go into web browsing. In other words... if my email is open and I've gone into the internet once (get error), then close internet (leave email open) and try to go into internet again I don't get the xbl error. Very strange.

    Hi Melissa,

Close Netscape, and open Windows Explorer:

Delete these files/folders located in the *.slt folder:

    XUL.mfl file
    localstore.rdf file
    netscape.hst
    history.dat
    panacea.dat
    Cache folder
    Chrome folder
(If you have user created chrome files, back them up first.)

    Open Netscape

If the above doesn't help, then try creating a new Profile, and see if this clears up the error.

    Hi Ramona,

Well, I deleted all the files you suggested I delete yesterday... but I was still getting the error. So today I was going to create a new profile (was a bit nervous about that so wanted to give myself more time.... afraid of losing bookmarks, address, etc...). However, when I came to the 'puter and checked it out today, I wasn't getting the error! Very happy there is no error today, but very confused as to why after deleting the files I would still get the error..... and then after waiting overnight the error would be gone. Strange, eh? Btw, What are the XUL, localstore, panacea folders? That is what do they do? I douldn't find any netscape.hst folder.... even did a find folder and came up empty.

    Hi Melissa,

Maybe a cold boot helped, once you had deleted the files?

Your history file is "history.dat ". The netscape.hst file is a Communicator file, and is sometimes still listed in the prefs.js file. If you didn't convert your Profile from Communicator, then you wouldn't have the file. I always list it for good measure, because as sure as I don't then someone does have it...

See this site for an explanation of the Preference files:
Files in your Mozilla profile directory

Thanks for the link with the information.

I didn't cold boot. I don't know what is going on. At least the pesky error message is gone. Thanks for the help!! :)
