I'm clueless why this is happening. I hit the wrong button about a week ago, have no idea which, but ever since then I can't get any msgs to download. Then it crashes; and I have to start NS7.1 all over again. ANY HINTS?

    Hi George,

Got one of those happy trigger fingers, huh? ;) Here are a couple of workarounds you can try:

Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
    Disable: Empty mail on exit

    Close Netscape & Quick Launch:
    Open Windows Explorer
    Navigate to your Profiles Folder
Delete all .msf files in the News Folder. DO NOT delete the files without the MSF files.

Each group must then have its View | Message and View | Sort by options reset individually.

Let us know if this helps. If not, then you will need to create a new Profile. See this guideline: Creating a New Profile

I am sorry, but you will have to be more specific. do you mean a Newsgroup from the Mail section? Are you subscribing to only news server? In the simplest case, you could do a couple of different things.
    1. Check if your settings are still correct.
2.Unsubscribe. Delete the files on the hard drive, pertaining to that account (with Netscape closed), and then resubscribe.

You will have to tell us if you get an error, and which error it is, or you just get kicked out. Is regular Mail ok?

    Now it just crashes

    Ramona,

I tried to find the "Disable ...Mail on exit ", or whatever it was. I looked under both the Server Settings for regular mail (which works fine) AND newsgroups. Now, when I try to download 500 msgs; NS7.1 freezes cold, then crashes. Any other ideas.

    Tanx,
    George

    Hi George,

Your "Empty Mail on Exit" setting is accessed in the Mail component.
    Open the Mail window
Now click on Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
"Empty Trash on exit" is the last check box listed. Remove the tick, if there is one.

Are you using a Theme other than the default Modern? If so revert back to Modern. This is a known factor in Mail problems.

If the above workarounds don't help, then I believe, at this point, I would follow Westside's advice to do the following:

    Close Netscape
    Open Windows Explorer
    Navigator to the Newsgroups folder
    Delete the offending Newsgroup(s)

Open Netscape and resubscribe to the Newsgroup(s).

If the problems continue, then you will need to create a new Profile.

    Thanks

I found the check. Haven't tried it yet; but I don't need it quite as critically now that those sites have gone forum.

    Thanks,
    George
