No, not really. Windows 98 was made "back then" (Win 98SE was put out in 99). It has some drivers on the CD for hardware that were made previous to those dates. Your hardware is very modern compared to what Windows 98 "knows ", BUT, if the hardware has drivers for Win 98 (the hardware manufacturer has developed and released drivers for 98) then unless the drivers are not installed correctly or the hardware is actually faulty, the hardware should work fine.

Note: If you choose "Skip file" then it is most likely that the drivers will not work. Windows will install it's "best guess" as to which drivers to install, but considering you are installing a piece of 2004 hardware...probably most unlikely.

You have not said if your brother-in-law has looked at it yet. If you cannot get further, post back with the sequence you have used (eg. removing the current drivers then running the driver installation) and importantly, what exactly the error messages say since some error messages have similar (but distinct) wording.

    Hope you are getting somewhere.

In addition to the above, we need to know if you need to use the "Skip file" after the hard wizard has asked you to insert the Windows 98 CD disk. After a network card is installed Windows needs to install the network protocols for the card, that's why it asks for the Windows 98 CD (at least that is the way I see it). Your network card may be installed with the drivers, but cannot "talk" to others on the network because it does not have any protocols.

Tip: if the hardware wizard asks you to insert the Win 98 CD in the CD drive, any version of Win 98 will probably work.

That makes me wonder if the autorun feature is messing things up. I've never had a problem with it in a circumstance like your's but I suppose anything's possible.

Try reinstalling it again. When it prompts you for the win98 disk, put the disk in the CD tray, then, while holding down the shift key, close it. Hold the shift key for 10-15 seconds to be sure. What it does is prevent the cd from doing the autorun thing.

Once you've done that, release the shift key and then in the add new hardware thing browse to the win98 folder on the cd and select it. Cross your fingers and continue on as before. :D

i was also thinking about making a custom computer, for everything (except monitor, mouse, keyboard) i came up with 607.93 lol, alot cheaper than and XPS or Alienware whatever.

i found a ABIT ATX Motherboard 2000MHZ, for 109.99, at bestbuy.

and a AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000t w/ Hyper Transport Technology, at bestbuy also, for 189.99. i guess thats cheap lol, thats probrably the only place i will get the stuff from, dont buy online :) .

It is good to stop or take a break. It only seems to get more frustrating. Later, if you would like to try again by installing the card manually, just post back here (bump :)).

If you get time, check in the "manuals" folder on the drivers CD in case there may be something you missed.
