There is a new email hoax going the rounds at the moment.
This hoax discusses a "virus" that comes in the form of
a file called jdbgmgr.exe. It instructions people to search
for and delete the jdbgmgr.exe file.

In fact, jdbgmgr.exe is a standard windows system file. The
file is a Java debugger manager. This is a Microsoft file
that is installed when you install Windows

If you receive this hoax email please ignore the
information it contains and do not pass it on to your
    friends.

DO NOT delete the jdbgmgr.exe file.

I have copied one version of the hoax below for your
information. There appears to be several versions of the
hoax circulating but they all convey the same basic
    information.

    ++++++++++++++++++ BEGIN HOAX QUOTE+++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Laddies and gentlemen,
My hard disk has been infected by a virus called "jdbgmgr.exe ".
After a 14 days sleep, this virus will attack all the persons
of your address book. Neither McAFEE, nor NORTON can discover
it. I have discovered it on my hard disk just now.
This is the way how to get rid of it:

    1/ Start
2/ Search, specify the name of the virus "jdbgmgr.exe "
3/ Make sure, you are searching on your hard disk "C "
    4/ Choose "Search now "
5/ If you find it, you'll see the icone of a teddy bear,
    DON'T OPEN IT!!!
6/ Press the right button of the mouse and send it to the
bin or delete it with SHIFT DELETE.

If you find it on your hard disk, please send this message
to all the persons of your address book immediately as we
don't know when we were infected. Sorry for this trouble,
    thank you for your help.

I can't imagine what kind of sick pleasure people get out of thinking up one of these hoaxes & sending it out. They have got to be mentally disturbed individuals, or just downright mean spirited.

Thank you 4harpers. I will copy your post & send it to some friends whom I know that would definitely fall for that sort of thing, even though I have told them several times not to do stuff just because an e-mail tells you to & even given them links to pages to check out stuff to see if it is real or a hoax.

oops! I fell for the hoax.

Fortunately, I did not forward the message to friends.

How do I restore the Java debugger manager? Or is it necessary?

    Thank you for helping.

    Hello Joannan,

You could have a friend who is running the same OS as you to make a copy & put it on a floppy for you & you just copy & paste it back in there I think. I don't think it would hurt to do it that way.

If anyone knows where on the Internet the file can be found & downloaded, that would be a good second choice.

Someone could send it to you through e-mail, but I am a little leary of that, because files have been known to become corrupted by being sent through e-mail. Then again, files have been known to get corrupted during downloads too. :) So................

If it says debugger in the description, then I would assume that it is a fairly important file with a fairly important function. I don't know exactly what it's function is, but that is what I would assume.

    Hi Deloris and Daizy -

Thank you for responding to my question concerning the virus hoax.

I overlooked the link in the first message. Will let you know which method I use and what the outcome is.

    Hi Joannan,

    Yes, you are welcome.

I too overlooked that link. I have replaced files & fixed problems, by copying & pasting a lot of times with no ill effects.

In fact just recently, I had to do just that very thing with some files , because of a so-called ISP Tech Support person. He insisted the problem was on my end of the whole thing, because no one else in our area had called in any complaints about the same thing. By the time he'd finished, my computer was booting into a black screen & telling me that I had several files missing. I was having to hit any key to continue several times before it would boot into Windows. Well, of course then, after he'd made this mess, he proceeded to abandon me, telling me that I was going to have to re-format. That my problems were more serious than he'd realized. Well, of course they were after HE got through. :) The only problem I was having before he did this was not being able to send e-mail. It was a real mess afterward. I had to get it straightened out on my own. These were files you don't find just anywhere either. So I suggested to the hubby that I write the file names down & he get them off of his computer & bring them to me on a floppy. He did this & it fixed the problem right up when I copied & pasted them back to where they belonged. I was back to normal. :)

Oh yeah! It turned out that the problem was on their end after all, not mine. Finally two days later we were able to send e-mail. Did I get an apology to me for what he'd done to my computer? You guessed it! Sure didn't! Not even a call saying it was fixed on their end.

Downloading the VM would likely be the best fix for the debugger though.

I would be curious to know, as well, which method you decide on & how it turned out. :)

    Hi,

I used the System File Checker as recommended by the link symantec.com. It restored the file without a hitch.

    Thank you again.
