    Hi,

I hope this is the correct place for my question. If not, I apologize.

I just got DSL a month ago and already my modem is not working. As I am a bit paranoid, I turn the modem off when I am not online by pulling the power cord out of the power strip. When I need to get back online I just connect the power cord once again. Can this cause any damage to the modem? TIA.

No real problem there, but the greatest load placed on any electrical/electronic item is on power up. If you have adequate firewall/av, etc no reason why you should not leave it connected - mine is - all day :)

    Hi Pete,

Thanks for your quick reply. I do have FW and AV but I do not feel comfortable using my computer while being connected. Can you suggest an alternative to what I am doing?

Also, could you please tell me if I have to do anything about the DSL connection in order to use dial-up? I have left everything DSL related the way it was, and just used the computer modem to connect.

    Hi Ann

If you feel more comfortable/secure in unplugging the modem whilst not on line then continue to do that. As I said there is no need, but peace of mind is priceless:)
Leave things just as they are - you will be using another modem for your dialup connection.

Thanks so much, Pete. I called AT&T and the tech said I had to disconnect the DSL wire and telephone and the filter. I could not understand why because I had already tried and was connected.
