I have a win98 peer to peer network with one computer designated a sort of fileserver with folders shared with passwords. The other computers access this "fileserver" find the folder they want, enter a password and they're in. Easy and works exactly the way we want.
I now have a winXP Pro machine and have set it up to network. No problems all machines can see each other. I can even see the folders on the win98 "fileserver ". When trying to access the folders with passwords a dialogue box comes up and asks for the password I enter it and no go, nothing happens. I can't get in. If the fodler has no password set, no problems.
It appears there is only one user account, Admin. When trying to access the shared folders on the 98 machine the dialogue box list the computers name and then "guest ".
Now I'm new to XP Pro so be kind.

Greg - this will be a couple of guesses since I don't have a 9X system to play with and haven't tried going from XP to passworded 9X shares.

The problem lies with the fact that 9X/ME deal with security in a completely different fashion than NT4/W2K/XP and most folks have problems getting the 9X system to properly connect to XP (which has an easy fix BTW).

You should have a guest account on the XP system. It is installed by default but with XP-pro, it is initially disabled (security measure for large networks).

Try a right-click on My Computer then manage~local users and groups~users and enabling the guest account.

Then I think you will be able to connect to the 98 PC shares after you enter the password.

If not, post back. Surely someone on here will have a mixed network and can try a few things to give you a fix.

I tried your suggestion but no go. Guest was already enabled. Any other ideas would be much appreciated.
It's a bit of a pain when they (Microsoft) update and you have to learn it all again.
    Oh well!

    Another guess -

Try going into Windows Explorer~tools~folder options~view and unchecking the "simple file sharing" option.

And if all else fails, you can always make the XP box your file server cause I know how to help you connect to shares on one of those. :)

Thanks again. I'll give it a try. And yes I was thinking of doing that with the XP machine but will be big job and very busy at work just now.

If I decide to go that way I'll post back later for help 'cause I know I'll need it.
