    hello,

in windows server 2003 i have set up a print server. all xp clients in the network print via the printers included on this print server. i have only 1 problem, locally this is VERY slow...

first of all i add a new local tcp/ip printer on the server and set all the needed values.
next i add a network printer on each client computer. Here comes the problem, if i just add the network printer, everything is almost fine, but on the server i have made a printing preferences template for each printer which i want to use.

so when the network printer is added, it inherits the settings from the printserver. and if i choose the printer in the print dialog of a document, it is selected relatively fast(1,5seconds). But as soon as i set the inherited template in the printing preferences of the printer on the client computer, it takes about 8 seconds to select the printer from the list in the print dialog??

can anyone tell me what this could be? i have checked printer sharing options in the exceptions from the firewall allthough the firewall is disabled. the ip's are static so i have checked netbios

the printer is a HP 4250tn, the drivers that i have tried are: 4250 PCL 5e and 4250 PCL6

if have searched whole google, but i can't seem to find a working solution

    anyone please can help me??

thx for the reply, but will this inherit the printersettings on the server machine?

Thanks for the vote of confidence  but I tend to be lazy with printers, so not a lot of help here.

I'm pretty sure that if you use the "install as local printer and point at TCP/IP port" option (usually a fine way to set up network printers on XP) you won't inherit the server template - just use the server's print spooler. So that won't give what you want.

Therefore, I'd recommend you check your basics:

Two main causes of delays in printing are:
    • printers set up that aren't there or offline. Windows has a tendency to look ahead all the time. So when you start printing it tries to guess what you might do next and pre-load stuff ready for you to do it. However to do that it checks through all you printers. If there are printers that are off-line or non-existent set up on the PC, the system wastes a lot of time trying to contact them before getting on with the job at hand.
So it is always a good idea to remove from "Printers and faxes" all printers that are not in use.
    • name resolution delays. As with most things to do with networking with a Windows server, time-outs while your system tries to resolve user and machine names cause a lot of delays during network printing. So make sure all your PCs have the 2003 server set as they primary DNS server.
