    Hi-everyone,
I'm really going to DO IT!! I want to use TB as my email client and change from NS 7.0 (which works so well) I don't want to "mess" up anything..
From what I read in Mzine re: TB, It says for the first time installation, TB will bring up the option of merging my previous mail client, right??
I have been playing around with TB on my 2nd HD and it seems to work OK. In fact, I just D/l it over the previous version I had - it merged with the old version just fine?? I'm sure this isn't the recommended way! As with FF, remove the previous version and program files - and install. FF works great..
However, I can't afford to lose 11MB of stored, carefully foldered and logged mail from NS 7.0 if I try to install TB incorrectly!!! Am I right to assume if I copy the TB exe to my C drive it will recognize NS 7.0 communicater as my email client and ask to import??? Will all my settings and folders remain intact??
Though, all my NS mail profile is backed up/copied to the 2nd HD, I'm still unsure about the automatic process of merging TB into NS 7? I sure don't want to be forced to manually hunt, search and trying to FIND my email, if I naturally "*****" something up!!!
    Thanks - All,
    John in Dallas

That is correct John. When you install Thunderbird for the first time it will ask which program you want to use, for migrating your Mail. In your case you would select Netscape 7.0.

That you installed TB 1.0.2 OVER an older version gives me pause... Since you are worried about losing your Mail, I would uninstall TB, delete the Program Files, reboot your PC, then install the latest 1.0.2 version, to your C Drive. During the install of TB the Wizard will give you the option of Importing Netscape 7 Mail, etc. Please read this KB Article, which also mentions that you shouldn't install over an existing version:
First Time Migration. This lays it out, with screen shots of each step.

Let us know if you need further help.

    Thunderbird NOT WORKING!!

    Well, Ramona!!!
I knew this wouldn't WORK!!!! I took the plunge and installed TB..Option came up to import NS 7 mail, and ect. , it did. All 20 plus megs!!!! Huge program??
Now I can't send or recieve mail....Tb isn't in my add/remove list or programs on the start menu ...I can't make shortcuts to anything!!! Can't even start the program without going to the exe program....when I get it up, it won't take my password to email. Settings are exactly as in NS7.0!!!!!GR-GR....
I can't uninstall it - not being in the add/remove area. Had to install with admin rights. it worked fine. In limited user area - program is there in app. data. But, can't open program unless I find TBexe in folder. Can't make shortcuts to anything!!!!
Nothing is right here!!!! Now what???
NS7 is still working thankfully, How do I get TB OFF my computer without corrupting NS7 mail???
I wonder if copying from Fdrive to C drive corrupted something. That's what I did...D/L to F drive to play around with the program..It worked well so copied to my C drive and that's where everything went BAD!!

Hope you have any excellent idea!!<g>
    Thanks---I hate computers----John in Dallas.

The default location for TB should be in your C drive|Program Files|Mozilla Thunderbird, but since you started from a different drive, I don't know what is the effect. If you used a .zip file (unzipped), you could put it anywhere, and just rihght click|sent to Desktop,.and work from there. If you have installed TB on the F drive, and copied it, it should present in both drives.
It should work, but you took a very unorthodox path. Have ever installed anything in the F drive, and kept it there? Your personal info is in the C drive, and everything is separate from NS 7.x.
Have you considered copying or moving the installer file on the C drive, and then begin the installation?
It is very hard to tell what is going on. I would try to find out from Windows forum if what you did makes any sense. I, just, never heard of successful copying/ pasting from one drive to another.

    John,

As you now know, you can't just copy a program from one drive to another. As Westside suggested, if you want to use the program on the C drive, then install TB on the C drive.

I have no excellent idea, as far as uninstalling. I think you may have to uninstall manually, which isn't the best way. Or perhaps reinstall TB on the D drive, and that might replace the program in Add/Remove. Then you can uninstall, use your Registry cleaner, and remove all TB entries.

    the saga continues

    C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\y7lx5cg8.default\Mail
    =======================================================
    Hi-All,
Since I can't screen print the entire server settings, this is what's displayed in
local directory for TB path??? Isn't that strange "\y7|x5cg8.default "
Not at all like in NS7. I finally got TB up but it will not allow recieving of mail???
Keeps asking for pass word??? I can send mail, but it appears in NS7 in box??
Really interesting, what I've done!! TB works great on F drive where I initially d/L. Apparently, when I copied it to C drive it messed up something?
Westside: I did copy the installer, which was not present in the copying process, probably part of the problem?? TB is present on start menu and will open properly - all my mail is there. I just can't get mail...For some reason it's stuck on a pass word, which I don't have...
Mozilla says in a couple weeks they'll offer a CD for TB...I'll certainly get that. Now, If I can only "find" a way to safely "remove" this mess I've created???
Thanks all for your help...ONLY I can get myself into these situations>>>
Thankfully, my NS7 is not affected.
    John in Dallas.

    John,

You need to use the password you selected when you signed up with your ISP.

The different type of salted folder, places the random characters first, with your user name after the decimal.

It looks normal for the present versions of TB. Although it does not look like NS7, it is, basically the same. I can get pretty confusing to have the folder and .slt into one, but no so alien. The mail will go into any mail client which is active.
I am set up for mail in six different mail clients, so it does not surprise me.
What to do of this mess? I don't know enough of such situations, but you do have a valid profile, but an invalid program. I would install TB on the C drive. Would it pick up the existing profile. I don't know if you already tried it. But, you should be able to bring up the profile manager, and create a new profile, calling it what you want.
By the way you said that you copied the program from F to C. Where did you put it? It should have no registry keys associated to it, so you could delete whatever you copied/pasted. That's why I said to install TB on C drive, and do things correctly.
But, you don't want to remove what you have in the Profile folder.
I still do not understand why you can't use the TB on the F drive, unless you use the Cut, instead of Copy. If the program was indeed installed.
I better stop, because I am getting dizzy. I wish that the O! would be nearer the Big D, and I could hop over to see what you did.
