    Hi,

My OS system is Windows ME and I have the Norton Internet Security firewall 2003.
I am getting an error message after "successfully" downloading Netscape 7.02. I noticed someone else posted a similar problem back in November but I could not find the reply.
Error message is: Configuration Warning. An error occurred reading the start up configuration file. Please contact your administrator.
    SyntaxError: Illegal character.
    Followed by garbled characters.
I have uninstalled and re- downloaded several times both with the firewall off and on but no change. Does anyone have a solution?

    Welcome to the Forum, jcvoce!

    Hi jcvoce!

The problem is your prefs.js file, which is located in your salted folder:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

Does the syntax error list a script similar to:
    user_pref( "browser........... ");

If so, your Preference (prefs.js) file most likely is corrupt.

Try this and see if it corrects your problem:

With Netscape closed (including Quick Launch):
    Browse to your profile folder:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

Look for a file named prefs.bak
    If there, delete prefs.js
    Rename prefs.bak to prefs.js

    If prefs.bak doesn't exist
    Delete prefs.js (with Netscape open)
You will then need to recreate all your preferences.

Normally, uninstalling and reinstalling Netscape has no effect, when there is a problem with any Profile files...

Please post back with any questions.

    Ramona :D

Thank you all very much for the replies. Seemed both prefs.js and prefs.bak were corrupted.

I needed to delete both files and recreate my preferences.

This is a great forum and I will recommend it to all I know who need expert help!

    Thanks again...

    Hi jcvoce,

Not surprised that your prefs.bak was also corrupt, as is often the case. If Netscape has remained open, then your prefs.bak file remains "untainted ", but once you close the program, and reopen, then the prefs.bak is done for! :(

The moral of this story is to back up that Profiles Folder on a regular basis. In the event this error should recur (heaven forbid) then you will have a pristine prefs.js file to fall back on... ;)

Just one more bit of advice, and I promise to quit being preachy... If you will create a user.js file, then you will be less likely to experience another corruption of the prefs.js file. See: The USER.JS File

    Cheers!
