A recent failure of my NS program has left me somewhat crippled. I need help in getting the mail program to recogzine some of my old mail boxes. For example, file folders under users/mail such as people.sdb is not recognized. Also, files in users/mail such as trash & trash.snm are not recognized. Also, address books under users such as mainmisc.na2 are not recognized. Can you help me?

You are mentioning files from Netscape4.8 or earlier. What operating system are you using? See if you can find something here .
Note that in WinXP the files are hidden. The .sbd folders are the subfolders, and are found in a folder, and, as for all NS7.x programs the mail has pairs of fails, which include one with no extention, and one with .msf extention.
By the way what would you want to do with the Trash file?

I see the sbd folders in Mozilla (XP) and have copied my old sbd folders ther, but they still do not appear in the Netscape mailboxes. I also see the msf files, but what about the snm files and the na2 files ?

Take a look at the above web page. since you have XP, are you seeing the .snm and na2 files in the default location for XP? Yes they would be in a path like this: Mozilla|Profiles|default|xxxxx.slt etc. The 7.2 address book would have a .mab extention. In order to see .snm and na2 files they would have to be copied and pasted from a 4.x Users profile, or you are looking in the wrong place. With Netscape closed, delete all the useless stuff. The sbd folders should be opened, and their .msf files deleted. What you said, initially, i.e.users/mail such as trash & trash.snm are not recognized. Also, address books under users such as mainmisc.na2 are not recognized. is very confusing.

    netscape mail folders

I don't seem to be making any progress. What folders, files, address books, etc., can I manually transfer from 4x to 7x? and which files, etc., shold I delete ssince they are no longer recognized? I thought I did this once upon a time, but I have forgotten how. Please be specific since I am not an expert.

I will try to cover this, without giving you another link.
1.The .na2 address files from NS4.x cannot be copie/pasted, as they are of a different format. At least, I can say that I never tried to see if they could renamed as the bookmarks files are (by way if you copy/paste from 4.x to 7.x the bookmark.htm, and then rename it to bookmarks.html, it will work.
I don't remember ever having .sbd folders in 4.x, but if you have them, copy them, and then paste them into your 7.x mail account folder. Then open that folder and delete the .snm files in it All other files, of important, with no extention, can be either copied and pasted, or renamed, then copied and paste them, if your mail is already working in 7.x. Renaming will create a separate folder, with all the old mail. Typically you will want to copy/paste the Inbox and Sent box. There is no sense in copying any other file, like Trash, etc.

I just did a test, and I selected Tools|Import from the 7.x address book. And selected the 4.x Communicator. I still have the old Users folder, and I found my way to the pab.na2 file, and selected that. I was asked if I wanted the Home or Work addresses, and some files were imported. I found a "pab" folder in the 7.x address book. So, it is not necessary to have 4.x installed.
You can probably try the same thing with the bookmarks, but I failed to create a folder for the mail, so, it seems that you cannot do it without an installed 4.x. But, you can do it manually.

I have tried everything and cannot not get a single mail box to show up. I copied the sbd folders, deleted the snm files and no success. Any other thoughts? thanks

I have no idea. You trying to copy NS4.x stuff in 7.x. Is this what you had before? You should not have to even see any .snm file if you are working with the 7..2 profile. Honestly, I don't understand what you are doing.

    rong103,

    A few questions for you:

    1. Were you able to get your Address Book and Bookmarks migrated to Netscape 7.2?
    2. You say that Netscape 7.2 failed, then what did you do, i.e., did you uninstall Netscape, and if so, did you create a new Profile?
    3. When you copied Mail files/folders from Netscape 4.xx did you copy all mail files, Inbox, Drafts, Sent, and if so, did you rename the files? OldInbox, OldDrafts, etc.?
    4. Did you lose the existing mail in Netscape 7.2?

I'm just trying to clarify exactly how you tried to recover when Netscape 7.2 failed. This is something else you need to check:

Look at your Mail files to ensure that they are not marked as "Read only ".
    The files are located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profile_name\*.slt\Mail\pop.isp.net

Right click the Inbox file (without an extension)
    Select: Properties
At the bottom of the window in the "Attributes" fields, is "Read only" enabled? If so remove the tick in the check box. Do this for all your mail files.

One other setting to check, since none of your Mail is viewable:
    Open Netscape
Open: Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
Scroll down to the bottom of that window to the "Local directory" field
Does that path point to the correct location for your Profile?

If not, then correct the path to point to your Profile:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profile_name\*.slt\Mail\pop.isp.net

Just take it one step at a time and we will get to the bottom of your problem.

    netscape mailboxes

I am sorry for not replying sooner, but I just now saw your message. I have resurrected enough mail boxes to be satisfied. I never lost most of my address books or my bookmarks. I don't know wha caused the crash, but when I tried to rerun setup, it wiped out all of the current mailbox data. Thanks for your help, but I'm moving on to a spell check problem now.
