Have been using Netscape 7.02 for several months but lately I get a message "Cannot Find The URL for..." for my Home Page (yahoo.com) and for tvguide.com.

It is sporadic, sometimes all is well, sometimes I get the message.

I've tried renaming HOSTS to HOSTSOLD without any improvement.

    Any ideas?

System: Sony VAIO 3.0 GHz P4, 512 MB RAM, 7 GB free on C partition, 133 GB free on D partition, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2003, 56K v.92 modem.

    Hey there Larry!

Yahoo! is a Cookie thing. Check Cookie management, under:
    Edit | Preferences | Privacy | Cookies
    Click on: Manage stored cookies
Under Stored Cookies - Delete Yahoo
Also check Cookies Sites to ensure you haven't disallowed Yahoo there.

    Now logon

    Thanks Ramona!

I did what you said...I guess I'll have to wait and see if that fixes the sporadic problem....Actually I don't really understand how cookies could cause a sporadic problem, but there probably is a lot I don't understand.

How about the "Accept Cookies" settings?

I have cookies "enabled from originating sites only ".

    Is that the best setting?

    All the best, Larry

    Dear Ramona:

I'm still having a problem with "Can't find Yahoo" (my home page).

I remove the (about) 4 or 5 yahoo.com cookies and it finds it ok, for a while. I'm not sure why there are multiple cookies like "yahoo A ", "yahoo B ", etc?

Then all of a sudden it can't find it again.

If I go to other sites and eventually click "Home" it will sometimes find Yahoo, but not always!?

It doesn't seem like a workable solution to have to delete cookies at each session!

I tried disabling cookies, which worked, but then I can't log on to several favorite sites like "Finance.Yahoo.com" and this BBS.

    Help!

    Larry,
If this works, then go to "Finance.Yahoo.com "
Click on Tools | Cookie Manager
Select: Allow cookies from this site
Do the same for other sites you are unable to access...

    Check this setting:
    Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Cookies
Select: Enable cookies based on privacy settings.
Clicking the "View" button will allow you to set your privacy settings. Be sure these are set to "Medium" or "Low. "

    Return the setting to:
Enable cookies for the originating web site only

    HTH,

    Thanks Ramona:

    I'll give it a try!

Interestingly, yesterday PM Netscape couldn't find Yahoo and I shut down in frustration.

This AM it found Yahoo just fine without any changes!

I was naively (hoping or) assuming that a new PC with the new Netscape would be virtually problem-free! Ha, Ha!

    All the best,
    Larry

    This option doesn't exist:
"Click on Tools | Cookie Manager
Select: Allow cookies from this site. "
The options were: Block, Unblock (grayed-out), Manage Stored...
So, I assumed that that site was not blocked, and did the following:
    Edit | Preferences | Privacy & Security | Cookies
Selected: Enable cookies based on privacy settings.
Clicked the "View" button and set privacy settings to "Low. "
    Returned the setting to:
Enable cookies for the originating web site only.

    We'll see!
    Thanks again & best regards,
    Larry

    That didn't work!

The next time I started Netscape "Couldn't Find Yahoo.com "

Is there possibly some line I could modify/delete in prefs.js?

    Any other ideas?

    Best regards, Larry

PS: Just came back here after clicking Home after posting this reply and it found Yahoo! So, it's very intermittent at best. Seems weird that it finds Yahoo sometimes, and can't other times???

    Hi Larry,
Manage Stored Cookies = Cookie Manager

I tend to think that your intermittent problems accessing Yahoo is not a Netscape problem, but a site problem.

O.K., I signed up for My Yahoo, and get this, got an error as I completed the registration, and tried to go to My Yahoo!
The Operation timed out when attempting to contact e.my.yahoo.com.
I cleared my Cache, tried again, and was able to log in. I'll try accessing it from time to time and let you know my experience. I'm am able to log in now..... Checked my Cookies and I have 8 Yahoo cookies!

    Ramona:

What doesn't exist is "Allow cookies from this site ". The only options at Tools>Cookie Manager are 1) Block, 2) Unblock, 3) Manage Stored.

Interesting. I just started Netscape and it couldn't find Yahoo so I read your post, then clicked Home...No go!

Cleared both disk and memory caches, then it did find Yahoo.

Seems like a big PAIN to have to start Netscape then clear caches first!

By the way, my home page is just yahoo.com, not "My Yahoo ".

There must be a real solution?

    Best regards,
    Larry

    Hi Larry,

Clearing your Cache folder should be routine daily maintenance. Two other files to be deleted daily are XUL.mfl, and history.dat, all located in your *.slt folder.
The "Allow cookes from this site" is a Mozilla setting... sorry 'bout that.

    Hi Ramona:

And it continues....deleted XUL.mfl and history.dat, then logged onto Netscape and cleared the caches and history.

    It couldn't find yahoo.com, google.com, or tvguide.com!

Deleted all cookies for all three with the same results.

Tried various settings for managing cookies with no luck.

There is something seriously wrong....I didn't have a single problem for several months previously. Now, it's practically every time, but not every time, which leads me to think it's Netscape.

No known changes except regular live updates of Norton Internet Security/Anti-Virus.

    HELP,
    Larry

PS: After writing this I clicked HOME and it found yahoo.com just fine, without changing a thing!

    Then I clicked tvguide.com and voila...it worked!

PPS: After messing around a bit I am determined that it is related not to cookies, cache, etc. but somehow to surfing to some other site that works, then the problem seems to go away!
